meh... the MSOE study that i found said the extra guard, and regular were bad and the tough guard acceptable and i only use the TG on the jeep.. either way, i've never had/seen one fail in my 22 years (between parents vehicles, family's vehicles, friends vehicles, and friends of friends).. so i'm still a skeptic.. not saying there isnt possibly a problem.. i just wont completely change what's been working for me w/o good reason. (i.e. someone i know's car blows up due to filter issues)

I was the same but one day figured what the heck. Bought a Mobil 1 and havent looked back.
By far has given the largest gain in MPGs than all my higher dollar bolt ons. Added around 30 miles to a tank.
Hope the ticking problem has corrected itself. Let us know.

got some time yesterday to pickup a diff filter. Tried it and still the same. I climbed hills in the gravel pit behind my house for approx. 15 min. then shut vehicle off. Waited 15 min. started back up and it ticked, missed, had little oil pressure, and just ran like complete crap for 30 seconds. It then smoothed out and ran great.

Before I chose an oil filter I opened and compared all of them the fram seemed to have a design completely different from what I could see internally. I tried to pick the filter with the best looking design(meaning one that would hold oil better in off camber situations). Ended up with a supertech wal mart filter. They had others to choose from but nothing that looked like a better design. No Mobil1 at wallys.

I agree with firehawk on the oil pickup. This was my first thoughts when it started happening. Seems to support the characteristics of the problem best.

Just another thought.... My XJ had the problem with the #3 injector and heatsoak.  It would miss and run like crap for a short time until it got fuel back into the injector.  I will say it didn't tick, but missed and would barely run.  I wonder if you are having the same problem, and it is your low idle speed/miss that is causing you to have low oil pressure?

Again, just a thought.confuse

Finally made it back to put a conclusion to this for everyone.
changed oil pump and pickup
bottom of motor caked with oil scum buildup
scraped off what we could and put in the new pump and pickup
runs great now oil pressure is always between 35 and 55 now
