what to do, what to do.... ??????

so i'm having a hard time deciding whether or not to do something to my rig.   mine is the Limited and so therefore it has all the painted extra body "dress up" pieces.  i really like the look of them as it makes the xj look really clean and sharp.

so here's my dilemma... i can't decide whether or not i should just leave everything as it is.... or if i should take off the bumper pieces on the doors, take off the factory fender flares, modify the plastic of the front and rear bumpers, and then get some black Herculiner roll-on bedliner and do my rocker panels/lower doors with that.   i kind of did that to my old rig and i really liked it as well.  so now i'm torn......

so what do you all think?? i'm open to all opinions and other ideas!

If I were you, I would leave them on.  At least the front flares and the door pieces.  I like the looks of my ride, don't get me wrong.  But when I bought mine it only had 3 of the 4 flares, so I took mine off.  The rears arent that big of a deal.  I would probably take them off.  But the fronts, when you take them off you have to take off the cover's that cover up the windsheild washer pumps, and all the rest of the stuff up there.  So in the winter, salt is eating at a bunch of stuff that was not intended to see.  Also your tires will flip stuff all down the side of your rig all the time.

Just my 2 cents.  I really like the looks of the ones that have the extra trim stuff on them.hmm

I would say leave it. If it is really bothering you down the road, change it. I too like the clean look.

My 2000 XJ also has the bedliner on the lower doors (both inside and out), rockers and tailgate. This was done by the previous owner. However, IMO, it sort of misses the point because I believe most of the real damage happens from the inside out, not from the outside in. Although I would agree that the bedliner helps with rock chips and damage of that kind. For example my drivers door has some rust starting where the door skin is folded over the door frame. I don't really know of a good way to retard that rusting process, so if anyone has some ideas, let me know.

all good points and much appreciated.

one note though, my inner fender liners have already been removed.... so those are non-existent regardless of what i do.

ok, so let me ask you this then. say i decide to leave it all on there..... what if i get creative with tape and still do the bedliner on the rockers, but also bring it up onto the fender flares and tie that all together..... any opinions on that idea?? or suggest a variation of that idea?

Photoshop can do wonders in deciding how/what you want to paint.

Personally I wouldn't paint the '97+ flares unless you REALLY know what your doing...

hmmmm... well maybe i'll just bedliner the very lower rockers. from the pinch seam underneath, on up to that first bend in the doors. that'll at least give me a little rock chip and rust protection there....

You could do suttle mods like trimming off the lower portion of bumper caps and removing the air dam from under the frt bumper. Then remove body side mouldings. Some bedliner can be painted or even comes in white too.

id agree with threeEs on trimming and all.
i wouldn't do anything to drastic with a rig that clean even though i do like the painted look below the trim line.

mess around in photoshop see if you cant find something that you like

Don't they offer colored bedliner stuff?  Go with white to keep the clean look.  If you get bumpers, repaint them white as well.  If you don't like it you can always repaint them black.

Keep the salt off of your Jeep, it'll last longer.  Gotta love my '92 Honda 'winter car' for that reason.smile Of course, if it's blizzarding, then Jeep gets to play in the snow a bit.biggrin
