Roof Rack

Ok, I have decided that I am going to buy a roof rack.  My only stipulation is that it has to be able to hold a 31' Spare.  I don't necissarly care about light or any of that stuff but I want to put the spare up there.  This is your chance to let me know what brand or rack you have and what is good/bad about it.  Thanks.
Andy

Well it really depends on what your wanting to use your rack for. If it's just to hold a spare than my recomendation would be a Surco brand rack. If your wanting to do a lot more, than you'll need something a bit more heavy duty (in my opinion).

Unless your wanting to spend some good $$ on a high end one, the Surco are relativly cheap, and get the job done well.

The Surco's come in several different sizes'

40x50
45x50
45x60
50x60

From what I've read on other forums, the majority of the people go with the 45x60 on thier XJ's. It's part number SUR-S4560 on summitracing.com.

You will also want to get the J100 mounts with them so you can mount it to your factory rails. This part number is SUR-J100 on summitracing.com.

Also Surco has a TON of other accessories you can purchase for your rack as well, including spare tire holder, hi-lift jack mounts, light mounts, shovel mounts etc.

Adam do they still make the Confer like you have? I can't seem to find it available anywhere on the net.

Here are some shots of the Rack before I got it on, and then pics of the spare tire carrier on it and then with and without the tire.

Overall I am happy with it.  It looks nice and seems pritty sturdy.biggrin

Move the rack back about 6" towards the rear. You'll get better gas milage. Follow the line of the windsheild and never go infront of it and you'll get much better gas milage.

Otherwise looks great!

I moved mine and got about 3mpg better by moving it past that "imaginary" line.
