Thermostat/gauge

Ok. I was reading a couple of weekends ago that if you have the wrong thermostat in the 'ol XJ it would help with the gas mileage.  I had a 180 therm.  with a 180 gauge in the dash.  With this setup it usually rang 190-195.  Just put in a 195 therm. and now on the gauge it is running at 210.  My buddy told me that by changing the therm.  to 195 it would make 180 on the gauge actually be 195.  If that was the case 210 would actually be 235.  So my question is 'does the gauge actually read the correct temp. or is it an adjusted temp because of the thermostat and the gauge not being the same anymore?  Sorry if that is confusing.  I just don't want to be driving that thing around if it is at 235 even though it says 210. eyepopping.gif
Thanks

I run the 180's and have had good results. Just changing the t-stat won't make your milage anything better thats noticable...

I figured that was true but for $5, I figured why not put it back to the way it should be?  hmm

So, what about underhood temps with the low-temp thermostats? Do they help with that?

I don't know for sure, but I would think that if the engine was cooler so would under the hood temps.
