Problem with my Cherokee...	Permalink

My Jeep (1989 Cherokee 4X4 4.0L I6, 5-Spd Manual) will start up after 5 seconds of cranking or so. It idles fine and just barely any pressure on the throttle and it runs fine, but once you start opening up the throttle on it, it starts shuttering and bucking and an occasional backfire. Putting the throttle to the floor will stop the shuttering and it will RPM but it revs really really slow.... I am questioning a throttle position sensor, but really do not know how to check them. It seems that when you start pressing the accelerator down to the floor that the engine just can't keep up. Also, is there any place out there to find one for a decent price? It seems to me that the manual transmission sensor is a lot more expensive than the automatic version, which I haven't quite figured out yet either... Well, finally got a chance to do some checking this afternoon. A friend of mine who is a mechanic suggested that we check the fuel pressure after I told him what it was doing.

When I turned on the key, it barely had 5 psi, when I started it after 5-10 seconds of cranking, it was barely pulling 20 psi....

So now I am in the process of finding a fuel pump.

If you're looking for a fuel pump, I may have a line on Delphi pumps at a reasonable price. OEM style pumps, but 50% of the cost. Also much better quality than the Autozone pumps.....Drop me a line sometime __________________ 89 XJ. Rusty, but bone stock

Well, finally got a chance to work on my Jeep tonight. Got a new Delphi pump from O'Reilly's along with new strainer and filter. Pics were taken with my cell phone so I apologize if they are not very good quality. First thing I have to say is that I didn't expect it to be so easy to get at the pump and to change it. Upon pulling it out of the tank, we were greeted with this.... At this point we were going to go ahead and replace the pump anyway since we were there. I pulled the new pump out of the box and discover that they are not the same pump, or even close. The top is the pump that came out, the bottom is the new one. Even the new strainer doesn't look the same... New on top... I called O'Reilly's and they double checked the part numbers and they say that is what they show for 1987-1990 I believe... What do y'all think? Did I get the wrong pump or does my Jeep have the wrong one in it? Anyways, had to put the Jeep back together with the old pump and reconnecting the line. There were 2 different pumps used in the '87-'90 XJ's. Your original one looks like it was the Bosch pump. I belive that the replacement will work.
