clunking noise

I bought my XJ with its current lift 3" skyjacker, and since than I've been dealing with its problems one at a time.  My current is a clunking noise up front.  It only happens in reverse and when I apply and release the brakes repeaedly. Like backing down a driveway or out of a parking spot.

My only ideas are brake realated or upper control arms (bushings)????????
I replaced everything brake related this year. Still have problem. I inspected bushings and they look fine.  Any suggestions would be great. THANKSconfused

This post doesn't belong in FOR SALE JEEP STUFF.

Have you checked Motor mounts. Could be torquing it a bit on a broken bushing as you hit the brakes. Clunk would be the bolt/sleeve against the metal surrounding the rubber bushing.

I checked mounts when I change intake/ exhaust gasket this summer.  I will however check them for movement.  I was thinking maybe universal????? I've even crawled under it while a friend backed up SLOWLY and hit the brakes a number of times. I could hear the noise but saw nothing.

How do you like the long arm kit, and does your rig see much street use.
I would like to chuck my 3" and install an R.E. 5.5 Long arm kit.

What type of "clunking"? Explain the sound a bit further for us.

Actually its more like if you had a large amount of play in upper or lower control arms. Something seems to be rotating clockwise following the rotation of tires when in reverse. When I apply the brakes , whatever is preloaded falls free. CLUNK / BUMP???.  It also sounds cushened and not metal on metal.

Also gets worse in winter, but so does its on road driving habbits.confused

Don't want to sound smart or anything but you have to expect some worse driving habits in the winter from you xj.   Who else needs new U-joints REALLY bad?

No I was just stating that it only makes sense that it would be worse during the winter with the worse conditions.  The U-Joint statement was more directed towards myself.  Mine are Freaking horrible.  But if your U-joints are bad that might be the cause or helping this clunck some.  You can check the U-joints by getting under the XJ and trying to turn the front drive shaft with your hands.  If they are bad like mine you will be able to turn the drive shaft.  Mine I can turn almost 180 degrees hmm.    If they are good you shouldn't be able to move it much if any.

it very well could be your trac bar. if there is any play in it at all, it will make a clunk. i also had one from where the coils sit in the rubber isolater at the top of the coil spring. it had not "worn" in enough for it to sit properly, so it made a slight clunk when i stopped or turned quick

just ideas for u to look at

well I checked u-joints but front shaft only has about a 1/4 inch of movement.  no movement at all in rear.

track bar is solid still havent checked coils.
