2.5 compression ratio? non-xj

My brother-in-law just recieved a FREE 94 yj,  4cyl, 5-speed.
Number one problem on a long list is, previous onwer says it needs rings.
It runs and drives like any other 2.5 except any hill, overpass, exit ramp, ect.
You have to down shift and pray you  make it to the top. Its quite amusing.aww

Now the previous onwer also had a new head installed, oil pump, and a slew of tune ups done to it. Does this sound as if the engine is just plain tired, or maybe something else. Spedo stopped at 148,000+

I did a compression check and this is how it readsconfused

1=150
2=130
3=160
4=150                any thoughts thanks, Aaron

I'm guessing it's CR is around 8:1 (low for a somewhat modern vehicle) after taking the bad rings into consideration. Stock I think is the same as the 4.0L/242ci six, which is 8.5:1. I wish I could get a free YJ.

Is it backfiring at all? Or is it running normal just has no power behind it?

i did a write up a couple threads below this about fixing a non working speedo, check it out sometime... also, i have a '93 xj 2.5l 5 speed, and the downshifting is pretty much the norm for this engine... great on flat or mostly flat roads... i havent checked my compression at all though...

No it runs good. It does look like its running lean though. I'm going to change the fuel filter, add Engine Restore to it and he can run it till it dies.

As far as speedo. I think its the printed board gone bad. The temp, volt , and turn signals ( on dash only ) also dont work.  My guages and dash lighting in my 95 yj did this after I laid it on its side in a drainage ditch filled with 4' of water.

I would like some other ideas though.

run aftermarket gauges?
get a junkyard cluster (usually 10-25 bucks)?

we went to junkyard Sat. and picked up a few things. Didn't find gauges for it .
