Just wondering if anybody has ever redone their headliner. Mine is only being held up by the interior lights right now and i think i better redo it. Anybody have any tips or places i should get new fabric for it?
Thanks, Ben

I redid mine in an Old S-10. Looked great until I sold it, 5+ years. You can buy the new foam backed headliner material at Jo-anne's fabrics. Look online, or pick up fliers in store, they often have 50% off 1 item sales. This stuff is expensive like $10 a yeard from what I remember.
Basically carefully take out your headliner backer board, and lay it out flat. Scrape/rub off all the old loose glue. Get about 2 cans of 3m spray adhesive (don't use the cheap stuff you want this to stay up!) Start at one side, spray some glue and lay the fabric down. I used a wallpaper roller to gently press down the fabric. If you press down too hard the glue will come through.
Be careful to not stretch the fabric as your putting it on, especially on the curved sides. If you do eventually it will pull off the backer board. I had 2 small spots where this happened. Let it dry for a day, and then reinstall.
Overall pretty easy project if you take your take your time. Just always a pain to pull out the backers though.
Cost was maybe $30, a few beers, and an afternoon.
If your looking for cheap, and not looking so good, but doesn't matter. Just take a stapler and put some staples in it. That is what my cousin did and it worked, didn't look great though.

I miss the days that they made toys that could kill a kid.
Ya me and dad got lookin at after you left on saturday andy. Pulled half of it down and tried glueing it back up but didn't stay. Does anybody know if a headliner out of a newer xj will fit in my 91? I know where there is one out of i think a 99-01 that has the speakers in the headliner.

1. Using a phillips head screwdriver, remove the sun visors, retaining clips, over-head console and dome light from your Jeep Cherokee. The grab handles will require a Torx T-25 bit to remove an the rear seat belt upper mounts will require a Torx T-50 bit to remove.
2. Again, using a phillips head screwdriver, remove the trim along the outer edges of your roof starting from the tailgate. Leave the front 2 trim pieces loose but in place to help support the headliner as you carefully pull it out through the rear of your Jeep Cherokee. NOTE: If you decide you need to remove the rear hatch supports (shocks), support your rear hatch FIRST as it is heavy and WILL drop and bash you in the head. Yes, I know from experience...
3. Lay your headliner down on the ground with the fabric facing up. Then, carefully pull the old upholstery fabric off the being carefully not to damage the cardboard backing.
4. The remaining headliner upholstery fabric foam left behind on the cardboard backing must be removed to insure proper adhesion of the new headliner fabric. The old foam should crumble and brush off with very little effort using a coarse brush.
5. Lay out your new headliner upholstery fabric down on a clean work surface and with the foam side up. Then, slowly begin spraying an even coat of 3M Super Trim Adhesive over the entire headliner fabric foam in parallel overlapping strokes. Apply a second coat in the same fashion and in the same direction and then apply a 3rd coat perpendicular to the previous two. THIS IS KEY TO GETTING IT TO STAY UP!!!
6. Just as you did with your headliner upholstery fabric, slowly begin spraying an even coat of 3M Super Trim Adhesive over the entire headliner card board backing in parallel overlapping strokes. Apply a second coat in the same fashion and in the same direction and then apply a 3rd coat perpendicular to the previous two.
7. Allow a minimum of 5 minutes of drying time before proceeding and then, with the help of a friend, begin applying your new headliner upholstery fabric carefully onto the card board backing starting from the center edge of one end and working your way out and towards the other end. Then, using your hands, smooth out the headliner upholstery fabric with firm pressure to insure proper bonding to the card board backing.
8. Trim the excess headliner upholstery fabric along the edges of the head liner card board backing and cut out all the holes for the dome light, center console and wind visors.
9. Let everything set for about an hour and then carefully reinstall your newly upholstered headliner back into your Jeep Cherokee. Replace all the trim pieces, sun visors, dome light, center console, grab handles and seat belt mounts and you should be done.
Dam, thats a good tech article with pic's and everything. I watch Unique Whips, I always wondered how hard it would be to remove the HEadliner and re fabric it up, So far mine is in good shape, But i know where to go for a good direction.
Oh and to answer your question Ben about putting a later model XJ headliner into your XJ. Yes all headliners are interchangeable threwout the years....
