While attempting to drop my oil pan the directions instructed me to remove the steering damper to make room for the drop. I believe that the damper is connected to the tie rod? It's a long shock that connects to whatever the heck turns the wheels. Whatever part it is connected to, I stripped a freakin' bolt and nut. It's a 3/4in nut if that helps. Here is the over all view. Notice the stripped bolt dead center.
Here is a close up. It is the lower bolt that threads through (what I believe to be) the tie rod that is now stripped. What is this called and how to I replace it? Notice it is not the nut that actually goes through the damper that I stripped, which is what I'm going to call the upper bolt. I (incorrectly) thought that I could unbolt from the bottom and take the whole thing out. Turns out I needed to unbolt the top one (but hey, I didn't have an 11/16 wrench available). So now the lower bolt is stripped (and I'm scared to try the upper bolt).
Thoughts on which part this is and where to go to replace it?
I'm assuming your talking about the bolt that holds the steering stabilizer to the drag-link? I've attached a photo below with an arrow pointing to it. That part?
I know when I added an aftermarket stabilizer (they are cheap) to my XJ's that they came with a new bolt in the kit. I know for a fact that the Pro-Comp and the OME one does, not sure about other one's on the market.
Here's is a list of them that will fit your XJ, they are relativly cheap and a good upgrade. CLICK ME
As for just getting a replacement bolt, I do not now...
Yes, your photo is exactly what I'm talking about. So a new stabilizer bar kit would replace the exposed bolt from my 2nd photo? I'll look into that. I just wasn't sure if the bolt was one solid bolt that ran from the shock into the drag link or something else.
BTW - dropping the oil pan is a PITA. Just in case anyone was wondering. I didn't expect to have to disconnect the shocks to let the axle sag. *Grumble*
Basicly that "bolt" bolts to the stabilizer, than it bolts to the drag link. If you look at the products in the above link you'll see a photo of one in the OME kit. A picture is worth a 1000 words...
Oh yeah, just lift and and you'll find working on your XJ is SOOOOO much easier. Heck you don't even have to use jacks anymore unless your doing brakes/axle-ujoints/or swapping tires.
I tried a nail punch and small sledge to get that pin out of the drag link. Nothing.
Then I bought a pitman arm puller to push the thing out. It was in there so firmly that the puller just pulled itself right off the draglink, taking chunks of metal while it was at it.
Then I cut the bolt piece that was below the draglink with my dremel. I then tried the puller to no avail. So I tried drilling out the inside of the pin to weaken in walls of it so I could pry it out. This damn thing BROKE my pipe wrench in half trying to crank on it. LIterally - there is no exaggeration here.
Then I was pissed (it was my only pipe wrench) so I took my mini sledge and just started wailing on the top end of the pin from the side. The thought was to just break it in half and then deal with whatever was left in the drag link. Instead, after two anger-infused whacks, I noticed she moved a little. My buddy took a screwdriver and was then able to just push it out with little effort.
Moral? Always have a sledge handy and don't be afraid to whack things.
