I've posted here about a possible TC problem...vibration, roaring noise, etc... Well the Jeep dealer is telling me it is most likely the front diff. The front diff was totally rebuilt by them about 2 years ago under warranty from where I bought it, and I've had no problems until about 4-5 months ago. I told them about the backlash in the front, and they say it seems excessive. I have a couple of questions.
1. Can the backlash change in the D30 other than the gears wearing? I don't see how. BTW, I've been running Mobil1 75/140 in it.
2. When it was rebuilt they found about all the bearing races were broken. If it is the front diff again, AND it is in the same shape as before what might be causing it?
I have to take it back on Monday for them to tear into it and find out exactly whats going on, AND who's going to pay for the repairs!
they do have low pinions, but im not sure if that affects the backlash on the gear setups. they could be using the wrong specs to setup the gears. it may not be a bad thing to remind them of that since only two out of 20+ years of XJs, had different front axles
