Hello all, I was concerned with running lockers on a rig that will see more DD than trail use. How friendly are lockers to run on the street ? I think this will determine the level of parts I put on mine and prompt me to buy a trail only project.
I thought I had learned my lesson with the Bimmers,
An ARB or OX locker is selectable, which means it can be turned off while on the road, so it is invisible on the street.
But a Detroit Locker (which is cheaper) will not be as invisible on the street. But for the money, isnt a bad option.
An Aussie (which im not sure is considered a true locker), is a very good option as well for the money. Most toss them in the front axle, and say that they are invisible on the street, but can hear a slight ticking while turning.
An LSD, isnt a locker, but will allow both tires to spin with the loss of traction, is probably cheaper then an Aussie, but again, not a locker. I have one in the rear of my Ford 8.8" right now, and i cant even tell its there, unless i break the tires loose in the sand and leave two white marks behind.
Selectable lockers you won't even notice that they are there. I'd recomend going with an ARB or OX locker if you go that route. However they are expensive.
If you go with an autolocker I'd recomend going with an Aussie over anything else. You'll notice it's there, but it won't be to bad. They are also nice as you don't have to remove the gears to install. Not to bad of a price at $249 and have a great reputation.
