gearing questions

I just got a great deal on a set of five 33's,  I plan on mounting them on some soft 8's and most likely balance them with BB's.

Now I'm going to need to do something about gears.  I'm thinking if I switch out to my rear end to a 8.8 so that I get 4.10's.  Also then I could get 4.10 gears out of a yj hp30 front axle.  could I just swap them into my xj axle easily?  or even if I had to pay to get them installed, this would still be less than regearing my current axles right? an opinions?

well, your on the right track. you will need to regear if you are running 33s. i find that 4.10 or 4.56 are ideal for the 4.0 and 33s.

however, i dont quite understand your question. you say that you could get 4.10s out of a yj dana 30 and if you could swap them in easily. and if you have to pay to have them install, it would be less than regearing your current axles. well, putting 4.10s is regearing so i dont understand what the issue is. maybe im just stupid and cant figure it out. imslow.gif

I guess what I'm trying to say is can I just swap the gears myself if I dont remove the ring from the carrier? Or am I going to still need to get them installed by a shop? Would a shop have a problem installing used gears?

And do you think its possible to swap in an 8.8 and regear my hp 30 for less than what it would cost to just regear the axles that I have now?

well if you are swapping gears, the whole carrier and pinion will have to come out. if you have never changed gears, it is best to have someone that has do it, or take it to a shop. im not if the care that the gears are used.

if you bought 4.10s for your current axles, it would cost around $400-$500 plus the cost to have them put in.

I've always been told it's NOT recomended to swap in a set of used gears. I don't know the truth to that, but I've been told by several different people who I respect in that department and don't think they'd try to steer me in the wrong direction.

You can find an axle out of a 4cyl XJ or MJ as the majority of them had the 4.10 gears in them already.

As for the 8.8, Motion Offroad sells a 8.8" install kit to install it into your XJ or MJ for a decent price that includes everything needed.

Just pull the shaft out of your other axle and put it in the vac. disco axle. All you than need to do is pull the vac disco housing off and make a plate to cover it (easy job).

The vac. disco axle is actually stronger (housing wise) as it's reinforced in that area (upper control arm mount and coil bucket) on the pass side.
