Jeep Problems

I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee with 117,550 miles on it. Im having a few problems with it latley. Its backfiring and bogging down when i accelerate through right turns. Its also making a grinding sound when i accelerate with the air conditioner on. Any suggestions on the problems?

The fact that it only happens when turning makes me think that some wiring is getting bound up is some linkage up front like something to do with timing? or fuel? O2 sensor? Not sure on the grinding??? Nothing is rubbing anywhere?

The grinding with the A/C on could be a bearing in the compressor.

Could the fuel pump be losing its prime on the turns?

When I accelerate with the AC on the belt squeals so bad I can feel it vibrate :shudders:.. But that's getting dealt with tomorrow... actually that would be later today.

Anyways, if it's a grinding sound then I'd say probably a bearing in the compressor like Chris said.

Sounds like your AC pump is on it's way out (bearings going bad). It "free-spools" when it's not turned off, but when it's on it will be put to load and the bearings at the rear of the shaft will turn.

As far as the shuddering/popping sounds like a fuel issue. Stating it does it while turning is going to lead me to belive it's your fuel pump on the way out.

my fuel cuts out on left turns in my '93, it doesnt bother be too much because as long as the tank is 1/4 full or higher it wont do it no matter what..

for the driveability...
how's fuel pressure? Has a tune up been performed lately?

for the A/C...
don't use it until you get a different compressor in there. My clutch is out (when I turn the AC on I can see a spark in the clutch mechanism but nothing else happens) and I'd rather not do anything that might make matters worse.

I guess im gonna have to bite the bullitt and put a full tank of gas in it to to see if it stops sputtering around turns. I just had a new full pump put in Feb of 08.

As for the A/C i stopped using it and havent had any problems since.

Any updates on running a full tank?  How does the fuel filter look (drivers side, just behind the rear pass. door)?  New or old rusty and crusty?

When i run a full tank of gas the bogging down only occurs when i stomp on the gas. When the tank gets lower the bogging down occurs whenever you are accelerating around right turns. It has to be fuel pump related but i just had it replaced around the January time period. As for the fuel filter its not rusty or crustly but you can tell that it is not new.
