Death Wobble from rear...sitting still?

Went to go down a slight embankment today and the rear started shaking, so I hit the brakes and come to a stop and it's like DW x 10.

Anyone heard of this?

And on a completely unrelated note: there's oil coming out from my oil cap spilling on to the block (new cap, and it's not a lot of oil, it always stays up to the right spot on the dipstick), and there's fluid that's caked onto the bottom of the front pumpkin. Either of these things a concern?

I have never heard of this.  I would check the control arms for the rear, and the shackles maybe.  Do you have a sway bar in the rear still?

Well unless the previous owner took it out, which I highly doubt, the sway bar is still in the rear. I've heard I don't need it so I'll probably just take it out.

And I'll have to check out those other things tomorrow.

It is impossible to have DW on a rear axle, as the tires do not turn side to side. DW Is the result of a set of tires moving back and forth rapidly.

Sounds to me like a bad motor or tranny mount, causing the drivetrain to possibly "shake". I'd also look into the bushings on both the front and rear of each leaf as well as the bushing on the shackle's.

And Andy, an XJ does not have control arms in the rear, we have leafs....

Well obviously not necessarily DW, I was just comparing the feeling to that of DW.

If I actually did find that the mounts are the problem,

How are we feeling about these motor mounts?

And the transmisson and torque arm mounts from MORE?

And from what I've read it's probably a reasonable upgrade anyways, seeing as OEM are basically regarded as s**t.

You do NOT want poly mounts for the motor or the tranny. They will shake you to death. You want rubber.

The motor mounts you linked to are awsome (I run them on my XJ). The tranny mount is not so much (in my opinion). The factory replacement tranny mount is fine, and they are fairly inexpensive.

Alright then, if it turns out that's what it is I'll have to invest in those.
