One thing that i notice with my xj is a knock that seems to be coming from the lower part of the engine. I really notice it when idling at a stop sign or red light under accelration i don't hear it. Has anyone had this problem? If so what did you do to fix it?
Torque Convertor bolts. Their is an access panel on the front of the tranny that you can take off and access them. They are most likely loose, thus causing the torque convertor to "knock" at idel.
I have enough oil check it daily. Does sound like a diesel at idle. I don't think it's a bearing as performance has not changed and it hasn't gotten worse. Not sure about the torque convertor. don't have the technical expertise needed to crack that one open.
There is a small plate near the bottom of the tranny right where it mounts up to the motor. All you have to do is take a couple bolts out of the cover and remove the cover. Pretty easy to get to. Might want to check the torque converter bolts like LEAD NOT FOLLOW mentioned.

Lead may be right . I just fixed my lower, at idle only engine knock. Thanks Okie for bringing this question to the forum. I would have gone on just thinking it was irreversable damage caused by hydrolocking my engine last year. Now for that lifter noise. Any quick fixes for that Adam?
