You were watching SPEED today wern't ya?

The Z4 came with several different engine options available. Anywhere from a 2.5L to a 3.2L.

The new 3.0L (N52) that uses the magnesium block is the one they were talking about today on SPEED. It's rated at 255hp and 220tq.

Honestly I've debated on dropping a BMW motor into one of my Jeeps for quite some time. I've done a few major motor swaps in my BMW's to a different BMW motor and based on that experience I would probally go with a S52 motor out of a 1995 Euro BMW M3 that is still OBD1 but is Dual Vanos. I've done the swap into older BMW's and it's "fairly" straight forward.

Going with a newer BMW Motor that's OBD2 is just asking for a nightmare (trust me I know first hand) and you'd rather shoot yourself in the head than deal with the vast amount of wiring. Let me just put it this way, it took me 4 years to just get the motor in, and wiring down for the stupid thing to even turn over. I'm now over 8 years into the project and I'm still not driving the car yet....

I've seen a flatfender with a old non-computerized/non EPA compliant vw diesel.  It'd be a fun little ride.

As for the BMW XJ... how's the torque of the BMW engine at low rpms compared to the 4.0/242?  I suppose running some sort of standalone system to run the fuel injection and ignition (as they lack a dizzy) it wouldn't be too hard to get rolling if you had the cooling, engine and transmission issues solved.
