Rear brakes lock-up.

Anyone have this similar situation? My rear brakes lock-up at slow speed stops. This usually only happens after sitting overnight or parked for a while. More so the colder it gets. I have my guesses but just wondering what your experiances have been.

How old are your brakes?

Completly replaced, drums, shoes, hardware, and wheel cyl. in April and RE lines installed when I installed lift. Fluid changed at time of lift also.
I had replaced drums and shoes prior to April after I bought it from PO. The drum on pass side had warped due to bad wheel cyl. So I replaced everything.
Only things I have not replaced are. Hard lines, vac booster, master cyl., or proportion valve. (if it has one?) Does not have parking brake cable or hardware either. (cable was removed by trail debris)

Have you tried taking the drums off to make sure they are not rusted or dirty? 8 months does give time to get them like that especially if you have been wheeling or anything. Otherwise dunno.

I did inspect them when I had it apart when installing the new lift. I do dirve it daily so doesnt really get a chance to rust.

The only thing I can think of is condinsation in the lines freezing and causing " anurisiums(sp)".Sorry can't think of another discription.
Maybe thats why it goes away after driving a few miles. Being in the rear only.Could my exhaust being dumped at the axle, above the line ( I'll get pics to give a better idea as to location). Cause heat, creating condinsation in line. Than freezing as it sits over night or longer periods of time.?????????????????????????? Or would this cause a brake fade? Not a lock-up.

This is a common problem this time of year due to the weather. The drums get wet due to snow/rain. In return the wetness causes rust to form, or it simply freazes. This in retrun fuses the drums to the hub causing it to lock up.

It goes away as your simply rubbing the new layer of rust off when you start moving, or your "melting" the frozen ice away.

Try putting a plastic bag around the hub one night so no snow/rain gets down in that area. Remove it prior to moving the next morning and see if it still does it.

no.....I would tell you it's your wheel cylinders but you already replaced those....I would try flushing the brake system and put new brake fluid back in like DOT3 Synthetic....

I would agree with both above, if could be freezing up on you and then releasing as you drive. It could also need the fluid completely swapped out. If it gets to dirty or too much moisture it no longer has the strength to work properly because the pressure will not allow it to work. I know VWs want their systems flushed every 2 years for that reason.

My GF's brothers car at least used to do this really bad since he got his rear brakes replaced.

I planned on switching to syn. fluids hopefully this will help. Also will be doing a disc swap.
Teraflex makes a nice kit. May also use 2003 and up KJ rear brakes. Pricing is similar.
Untill then I would like to fix this problem.

Found a problem not sure it's related. The diaphram on the mater cly. lid had a tear in it and was filled with fluid. Don't know if it would have caused problem, but replaced it anyway.
No lock-up this morning.

if it had a tear in it you may be getting water in it via condensation. Water and fluid don't mix. Also it is supposed to be a sealed system and with the hole there it may no longer be air tight. I would get a new seal and replace the fluid.

Changed cap but didnt change fluid. Still no lock-up sence that. Come spring I'll be changing to rear discs. So at the same time I'll also change all lines and vac booster. I found the vac booster has a lot of surface rust on the bottom of it and a couple of spots that may be more than just surface. Also changed all vac lines and relocated vac ball from bumper to under hood. Think I am good till I do swap of brakes. I HOPE.

Fixed the problem. Seems the adj. cable broke inside the drum on the drivers side. This allowed all the parts associated with it to roam about inside the drum. Destroying the frt. shoe. Yes I have been driving on it for about two months. Good thing I bought the lifetime parts from Autozone. Repair total cost. $15.00 to renew lifetime warranty. So Rebecca was right I simply was neglected brakes, and faulty imported replacement parts.
