Opinions on making a truss for my front axle

Thinking about fabing up a truss for the HP axle before I install it.  I'm looking for opinions on how to do it right.

I can make one from some stock we have at work.  I will weld it to the diff housing and the right side UCA support.  I'm wondering since the support is fairly thin stock, and under stress it would be the weak point.  What if I boxed the front of it in.  Do you think that would strengthen it enough to actually stiffen the axle tube?confuse

Opinions anyone?smile

i dont even think you will need a truss unless you go with longarms or plan on jumping it.

Boxing off the pass side upper always helps. Typically when we've seen them fail it's the actual weld breaking loose.

The week point on the D30 is the long side (pass side) of the axle. Under stress coming down hard it'll bend the tube itself. Rock Krawler makes a cheap truss for the D30's for less than $100 that is a cheap upgrade to help that.

That's what I had in mind...sort of. I was wanting to extend it clear over to the UCA mount. I was thinking if I boxed in the front of the mount I would have the axle tube beefed up almost all the way to the right knuckle.

Brand ...ahem...shall we say... "R" sells one that is like what I'm wanting to do. Brand "R" is priced good but the shipping is half of what the part costs.bleh

I like the one TnT has, but don't want to cut all the UCA mounts off. Plus while it looks trick, it would be overkill for me. smile.gif

if ya do it your self you can make one out of box tubeing.....just take a piece of cardboard and make a template of the shape where your going to install it and trace it on the box tubeing and cut both sides and finish grind to fit on the axle tube and clean off the axle tube and weld it on!!!!...not to hard and a piece of box tubing is cheaper than a premade one and its also just as strong....thats what i did I'll get pics up after I unload my camera onto the computer

Looking forward to your pic's. I haven't decided if I want to use a piece of square tubing, or a piece of flat stock. We have both at the shop.

we did flat stock on one of ours...1/4" stock between the housing and the truss, same between the pass. side UCA mount and the coil bucket, and boxed in the UCA mount plus fully welded it.

then reinforced the coil buckets and LCA mounts had front skids welded to them.

it still hasn't been installed though...we need to rebuild the knuckles ujoints and replace hubs.

I'll try and find some pics today for you.

here are the pics
 Everything was grounded to fit properly and the welds were cleaned up.... then primed and painted black.... took about 1 hour for prepping the axle making a template, cutting, grinding, welding the piece to the axle.

A truss is never a bad idea. Especially supporting the passenger UCA mount. I've seen many fail from hard use.

I made a tube truss and ran 36's with my d30. I do some prerunning and it held up great.
The truss runs through the passenger UCA mount and that was then plated. Truss ran from bucket to bucket and was not welded to the diff housing.
