So, my XJ has been suffering from a fuel leak where the rubber tank-to-filter line meets the fuel pump on the tank.
First, get some tools and parts together. A couple screwdrivers, some zip ties, a source of light, and a utility knife.
As for parts, I like to buy American so with a little searching I got some high pressure rubber line that's 3/8" ID (four feet) and some hose clamps all made here on the home front.
And here's a look at the belly of the Jeep we'll be working on. Note rusty hose clamp.
Here's the other end of the fuel line, the fuel filter. I used a short length to connect the filter to hard line as I had to cut the old rubber line since that clamp was totally gone. The little stub wasn't long enough and resulted in leaks. The new one I cut was longer than needed, but works well.
After effort and magic words failed to help, I ended up reaching for the dremel tool. Some careful cutting removed the clamp without cutting through the line and therefore letting fumes out around a running power tool. That would not be safe!
Well, after pulling the old rubber line off, I'm not attaching the new line to this. Time for a new fuel pump. It works well, but the corossion is pretty bad on it, especially on the nipple where the fuel hose connects.
...another pic of the same...
From here I stuck the old fuel line on the broken/corroded nipple, to prevent fuel contamination. Well, now I'm waiting for a fuel pump. Updates to come.

cool..thanks for the great up close pics...just curious what is the typical lifetime on an original fuel pump...mine is a 2001 with 144k...should I replace?...will the fuel pump give me symptoms before it totally fails?
Sometimes they gradually go or they just GO.....its not a bad idea to put a new pump in...that's just called preventative maintenance and piece of mind...
Photography, writing, and of course turning wrenches are hobbies of mine. Not a problem.
Judging by looks mine is original. 206k miles.
If it's rusted up and all like mine is, I'd replace it out of spite. It's a lot less pricey if you make friends with a shop that'll let you get a commercial discount at Napa.

Not sure why I posted my hobbies... drunk posting? I don't drink much, but I'm a lightweight.
On topic now kids- Here's pics and what I did since previous post. 1. disconnect fuel line and pump wiring connector.
2. Take dremel tool and cut fuel tank straps, with fuel tank supported.
lower it gently and remove fueling and tank vent lines...
lower tank the rest of the way and remove small vent lines...
3. Remove old fuel pump...
4. I did GoJeep's fuel tank mod, so you can put more fuel into the stock tank. I took a 1/2" copper elbow and a 'water hammer reducer' and cut and JB welded to fit. This is optional.

5. Install sock filter on 'new' pump (this is a 96 so it's junkyard pumps only)... I had to disconnect this small black line to get it back together, then the line reconnected just fine.
6. Install pump in tank with new gasket (and lock ring if you desire)
7. Position tank and install new tank straps. Lift a little, connect small vent lines, lift some more and curse a lot as you wrestle fuel hoses on rear side of tank. Secure those with new clamps.
8. Using high pressure fuel line (fuel injection hose) go from fuel filter to fuel pump. You'll need 2 feet, or just a little more to be safe. Also reconnect fuel pump electronics. I wrecked my locks so I had to rig it by linking small zip ties. I 'squeezed' the sides first, then tightened it down to hold them together so I didn't end up with a goofy circle that would be less secure. Trim stray ends with sidecutter pliers. I plan on getting some wire loom protector for the fuel line to protect it from chafing on the zip ties.

We are now in the process of changing out the old 89 metal tank to the 99 poly tank, we have found that the old 3 wire set up isnt going to work and the new tank has a 4 wire with plug, now my question, which is better the poly or the metal tank, Add a skid plate .
