RE: Detours backbone System install

Looking really good!! That winch does look massive though... haha  Not in a bad way.    What are the little rust colored spots on the top of the bumper on either side of the winch?

Here's another pic.

As far as how big it looks, I think it is the sealed solenoid on top that makes it look that way.  It is the same winch as the SmittyBilt except for a lower gear ratio that the guy had that pulled us all out down at Haspin.

The other thing that makes it look big is the roller fairlead.  As soon as I can I'm going to go with a synthetic winch rope and a Hawse fairlead.

The little rust colored spots....are rust.  Salt/water has gotten under the powdercoat and bubbled the paint off.  That is why I'm going to get it sandblasted and repaint it.

Another thing is that makes it look bigger I think is that most people have theirs on a whinch bumper, which allows it to sit down in the bumper.  The set up that you have makes it so that it is resting on top of everything.  Not bad, just a little different then most.  Overall I think that it looks great.  Good job on the buy.

Just curious as to why you chose that winch over others on the market?

Seems like an expensive options (the Detours setup) instead of just running a winch bumper, however I know why you went that way so no need to justify it. smile

Actually I have about as much in the entire setup as alot of winch bumpers alone.  I just wanted to keep the WP bumper, and as I have said a true winch bumper would have been alittle much IMO seeing how the rest of my Jeep is fairly stock looking.

I chose the Gorilla winch for a few reasons.  I liked the SmittyBilt, but it, and a SuperWinch, and I think a Mile Marker are the same basic winch, only sold under other names.  The Gorilla has a lower gear ratio which should give it more pulling power.  Plus the price was nice too.  I know it will not see alot of use, but it is there if I need it.

Besides Adam, you know I ask for advice/opinions but tend to go my own way at times.biggrin  I just like being different I guess.

Have you noticed any cooling issues yet?

No none yet.  It runs right at or slightly below 210* as usual.  Actually it does not block that much airflow.  Air can flow thru the winch under the solenoid and above the drum.  So I'm not expecting any problems, but I will keep an eye on it since the air temps will start to rise since spring is here.

I think it look's cool because it is different then what i am used to seeing.
I also wonder how it would stand up to a frontal deer hit

I think the grill and header panel would be the looser in that scenero.  I hope to NEVER find out.  I drive very carefully during early November when the rut starts as deer are traveling all over then.

I almost took out 3 the day before yesterday.  I hope to never find out what that is like, but I do so much country driving in the middle of the night it is only a matter of time I figure.  evileye
