what do i need to upgrade from 27 spline to 29

You'll need everything essentially. The only thing you can re-use is the axle housing and the gears. You'll need new shafts, bearings/seals, carrier (and everything associated with the carrier).

I guess you could machine your carrier to allow the 29 shafts to fit, but for the $$ in doing that you might as well buy the correct one.

It's honestly probably cheaper to just find a 29 spline axle than to upgrade unless your going with aftermarket shafts/gears/etc anyways while your doing it.

how hard would it be to find a 29 spline axle and about how much would it cost?

They were used in 97-01 XJ's. Not all of them had them though as the D35 was also available in those years.

I'd say around the $250 range for a 29 spline unit ready to bolt in, maybe a tad more if it has the factory trac-lok.
