XJ details 92 XJ Laredo 4.0 HO, AW4, NP231, chrysler 8.25 rear, dana 30 front...
I was wheeling a few weeks ago, and managed to mess thing up pretty bad. The t-case linkage came apart on my when I was in 4Lo and then shortly after I lost the rear driver wheel (lug nuts came loose) and all the springs went flying.
After SLOWLY driving it home I got it in the garage and started working on it. I had to take off a few brackets and using a jack take off the transmission support to drop the trans down a little bit, but I got it all back together and working.
I also got a drum rebuild kit and completed that.
I finished it up yesterday and went to take it for a test ride. Backed it out of the garage, put it in drive pulled out onto the road and began to accelerate. I got to about 15MPH and it still hadn't shifted to 2nd gear. got it up to 25 and nothing. slowed down, put the trans in 1-2 with no luck. tried 3, nadda. Got it back to the garage and went over everything again. All plugs are connected, linkage good, and a new TPS. Now when I was working on gettin the t-case linkage back together, I noticed that the Speed Sensor housing was cracked, not sure if that would cause this porblem though.
What could my problem be? the Speed sensor, TCU, something else? any information would be GREATLY appreciated.
another question....being that the speed sensor housing is cracked, I'm going to replace it, but its behind the bracket that the t-case linkage is held by. what's the easiest way to replace the speed sensor, if there is one?

x2 On not knowing how to help. I am sure that someone will pipe up and give ya some good info.
This might be a shot in the dark, but how is the Tranny Fluid level? Also is there any wierd clunks or anything? Or is it driving fine just not shifting? Have you tried accelerating up to say 15-20 and slowly letting off the gas to see if you can let it shift while not accelerating?

I miss the days that they made toys that could kill a kid.
fluid level is good all was normal until I went to take it out for the test ride. Even when I was on the way home stuck in 4lo it was shifting.
I downloaded the AW4 service manual, just havent had the time to read it yet and do any more investigation into what the heck went wrong. been a little busy since I posted this thread.
Thanks for the info. if anyone else has more input, lemme know. in the meantime, im gonna read the service manual.

finally messed around with it today. as the service manual said to do, I disconnected the TCU and tried to manually shift through the gears and it worked perfectly. so, I'm guessing that I need a new TCU

There is an inline fuse located close to the TCU, check to make sure that fuse is OK. Also there is on some Renix era's another fuse for the TCU under the driver side dash. If either fuse is blown your TCU will not function properly.
ok either I'm blind or just plain stupid. I can't seem to locate the in-line fuse(s) for the TCU does anyone have a pic of where its at?
I have also been trying to find someone with the DRB II reader so I could bring my TCU to get checked, but been unsuccessful so far.
I pulled the TCU out and traced the harness but still didn't find the fuse. What kind of fuse is it that I should be looking for? I checked the fuses under the hood and all were good there, also the fuses on the driver side fuse panel were all good. I must be missing the in-line one. so anyone, help, please? like I said, a pic would be a great help, or a detailed description. my next step is to take that dash panel completely out and see if i find anything.

When I was looking for the answer to your question I found this: LINK
Not really the answer that you were looking for, but I didn't know that it was even an option. I would love to do this to the XJ if I could make a switch that would allow the computer to shift it most of the time. The wife would never drive it if she had to flip switchs to get it to shift gears...

I've seen that mod a few times and thought about doing it, but I need to get my current situation resolved first. That is a food thought tho, it would keep my wife from drivin the XJ too. Lol good thinkin on that one!

All plugs are connected, linkage good, and a new TPS.
Could it be the New TPS? I had an old renix Cherokee that the new TPS was bad and caused a similar problem, replaced it and drove like a dream again... probably some diagnostic steps int he AW4 manual.
