i was wondering if there is a downside to swaping in the (np242 i think) transfer case that gives you the full time 4 high for is anything different is one stronger or better than the other thanks
The 242 has less options, and aftermarket support. SYE's, wide chains, 4.1 kits are much easier to find for the 231. Also the 242 looses the ability to operate in full time if you have front and rear lunch box lockers.
The 242 is a pretty strong case. Yes you can use full time still if you put a selectable in the front. You can run a lunchbox in the rear just fine. The 231 has alot more upgrades such as a wide chain, 32 spline sye's. I have a 242 and have never had any problems turning 33-35's.
I would run a NP231 TC over a NP242 TC anyday when it comes to offroad use.
The only benefit I see with a NP242 is the used on road during the winter (aka snow covered roads). But that's not enough of a reason for me to do a swap.
The NP231 is a much stronger TC, more aftermarket support, and the ability to actually "use" the lockers you have installed.
