Swapping a 88 XJ Engine with a 96 XJ Engine

Hello friends,

A friend of mine 88 Xj was giving him problems so he decided to change the engine and install a 96 engine. According to him he only changed the block and everything else including the wiring, computer, head, flywheel and sensors are for the 88 jeep. Problem is now the xj with the new engine block wont start. Its cranking and everything but it simply wont start.

What could the problem be and what other components must he absolutely have to change for the new engine to work. Thanks in advance. Ed

Ed,

So he ONLY swapped out the block, and everything else is off the '88 (Renix)?

He needs to be 110% sure this is the case; because if he used anything other than the block deteriming the issue will be much harder. I'd confirm that he ONLY used the block before you try to troubleshoot to much. Even if he used the '96 flexplate on the new block he'll have issues (which can easily be fixed).

I will be able to tell you what he'll need to do to make it run if he used other parts off the '96 other than the block, but I just want to make 100% sure of what parts he actually used from the '96.

Yes Adam. he confirmed that it is only the block that he changed. everything else is exactly as it is in the 88 xj. My friend happens to have advanced knowledge about vehicles but he is not very conversant with the jeeps. So to start with I gave him a copy of the FSM which he has studied but still he cant make the xj start. And of course seeing how frustrated he is I decided to find out from the ever resourceful members here whether there is a quick solution to that particular Xj's woes.... Ed

Chances are it's some 'doh' issue...

check all connectors, did he retain the 'old' flywheel, etc. Little thought of, but oh so troublesome items!!!!!!

Finally we identified the Jeep's problem and why it could not start with a new engine. Turns out that the culprit was the TPS.... But for some reason there was no Check Engine light. But I could be wrong maybe bad TPS does not show any DTC in the older Jeeps? This is a 88 XJ as indicated above that benefitted from a 96 XJ engine block. Thank you for your tips friends. Ed

ahh the old TPS...

I spent a lot of money fixing other things on my XJ when it was actually the TPS... Glad that you got it back running.

True sometimes we tend to overlook the obvious things and go searching for trouble elsewhere. Yes me too I am very happy for my buddy coz now he will be able to make better use of the XJ during this festive season. The friend feels indebted to me coz I supplied him with the TPS that I had kept together with my other extra sensors even though it was not for use with my 96 XJ. One more happy Jeeper :)

Merry Xmas & Happy New Year 2011 dear friends.

Ed

The attached picture below is what caused mine to break.  I tested it and it was off a little but not enough to make me think that it was causing my gas milage to be between 5-9mpg!!!

So started fixing EVERYTHING that I thought could have been messed up from swamping it.  Got new headers, new exaust, cat delete, both front and rear O2 sensors...

I think that there was other stuff too, just can't remember.  Finally just replaced it because I was tired of spending big bucks with no return and the TPS was less than $50 which at the time was how much it was costing to fill up my tank, and at 5-9 mgp that tank was costing ALOT to keep full... haha

/\ how deep was the muck inside the Jeep? I'd hate to know if mine went through that. Holes in the floor, holes in the floor, lookin like a fool with holes in the floor.

Haha, I like the reference.  It was not bad.  We were pulled out right away.  It was mostly water.

That bottle? You would want us to believe its mineral water but I wont believe that!!! Just come clean and disclose the contents inside disguised as water...... :)

There is a picture somewhere of us scooping it out with a cup....   It was very muddy stinky water...  I put the Jeep in the garage and threw a dehumidifier in the back for 2 days with all the windows out and sucked it out that way.  That was after shop vac'ing the whole thing.  It never once smelled afterward.  I was very lucky I thought that I was going to have to take the carpet out, and didn't.
