I know that Jeeps leak, it's a fact, but i want to cut it down a bit so i can park in the driveway again. i've cleaned up around my engine to look for problem areas. the rear main looks ok but the valve cover has a little seep and the oil cap itself is leaking (weird) so i've got a drip down the back of the engine. i've recently developed a second drip around the oil filter. the goofy thing is that it's above the filter itself. it SEEMS to be coming from the tube thing directly above the filter and behind my distributer cap (see pictures). what the heck is that and why do i have liquid all over it?
Not 100% sure but, that may be the plumbing for the EGR. My 1st guess would be a bad PCV. It's cheap to change and might be an easy fix. I'm saying that because much of what you describe might be higher internal block pressure which may be forcing oil out the seals. You could also pull the PCV out and do the old rattle test. Put it near your ear and shake the PCV. If it rattles and moves freely, it is likely good. If not, then replace it. If not careful, and it's oily, you might get a ear full of oil for free.

you're going to have to explain those acronyms for me. EGR i think is exhaust gas recirculation but i have no clue about PCV. i've been hunting around and think it could be either the oil pressure sending unit or a pressure relief valve. again, i'm just shooting in the dark. one symptom aside from oil all round my parking space is that my oil pressure gauge has always read high. sometimes as high as 65-70 at high revs. at a warm idle it usually sits around 40-45.

PCV is Positive Crancase Ventilation. The little valve usually sits atop of the valve cover. You don't have the year of your XJ posted but from the one photo the distributor cap would seem to indicate that you have a 4.0L.
I just checked the manual and the 2000 4.0 doesn't have a conventional PCV system but something they call a CCV or Crankcase Ventilation system. You might be best served in going to the tech section and doing some research on a model nearest to yours. Just load up the maintenance manual and go to the section on Emission Controls Systems. There are sections on testing and removal/installation for each system.
