just like the heading says, my a/c pully bearing locked up and engine won't run without squealing like a banshee!! i almost never use the a/c, so i'd rather just delete it from the equation. it's a 2001. i've read some other places that there is a bypass kit to do so, but i want to make sure this is the way to go. the part i've been seeing is a Dorman #34237, but i'm not entirely sure if it'll fit the 2001. click here to see the part, but it says it won't fit a 2001. BUT, if you change the year to a 2000 it says it will fit. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?????
somebody help!!
thanks!

CURRENTLY: 2001 Cherokee Limited 4-dr, 33" Uniroyal Liberator A/Ts, 6-8" well built custom lift (sorry, i haven't measured yet).
SOLD: Project Rig: 87 Cherokee Pioneer 4dr. bone stock now. coming soon: 3" budget lift, go completely doorless and chop the rear cargo area out.
Rear two bolts on bracket "may" need opened up a bit for holes to match up. Pully itself "may" not line up correctly with belt so you will have to space it further out.
On the XJ's the AC pump actually kicks on when you use defrost. If you deleate the AC pump all together your defrost may be effected.
As for the Dorman part numbers:
34171 - Is for '91-'95 34237 - Is for '96-'99 ('00-'01 may require modification)
The AC runs to act as a dehumidifier, as dry air helps evaporate the condensation on the inside of the windshield better.
If the AC doesn't work anyway (such as my Jeep, and probably most XJs by now), and you remove the compressor, I really don't think it'll affect operation unless the air doors and ducting is messed around with. Since the AC clutch on mine went out (I see a spark down in there but the compressor isn't turning... or even trying to turn...) I've thought of dumping the whole system. Save a little weight, open up some engine room, and how the lines are routed in my Jeep (I've noted AC lines are routed in a few different ways on MJ/XJs. Depends on the year I guess....) getting them out of the way would make oil filter access so good I could switch it out blindfolded.

Did this to mine and yes defrost will not work as well as it dose with AC. The AC aids in defrosting by balancing the humidity in the air not just drying it out. However the venting still functions but only drys out the air. Only thing I have found annoying was my eyes dry out. LOL . As for the doorman part Adams spot on pulley will not line up. Why ????? Not sure. Check out my build. Have a couple pics of the AC deleat pulley. Other option is to pick and pull a compressor and recharge system.

How's our chances of finding a good unit at a pik-a-part? Most ACs seem pretty much dead by 10 years. I'm not sure if it's bearings, internal, clutch, or just a lack of refridgerant. It just seems to me that AC compressors are one thing I'd stay away from at the pik-a-part.
I have no personal experience with used compressors though, so maybe with a recharge kit from the store they're good to go.

Most yards in MI have to sell a warrenty for a part and at $35.00 plus the $1.00 warrenty, total of $36.00. I would do the work and take a chance. Also looked at the differance between the 97-99 and 00-01 and my guess is the width of the coil packs prevent the delete brkt. from fitting properly.
