Let's Talk Rock Rails

If you were to build you own, what would your specs be?

2x2 or 2x3 rails?

3/16" or 1/4" wall thickness?

Would they be tucked under or have an edge to step on if needed?

I don't know... Just tell me how you would build them.

Please explain why you would pick one design over the other.

Here's my .02 worth.

I would hang a plumb bob from the seam between the door, and the rocker panel.  I would mount my sliders with the outer edge on that line.  For me, that would be enough protection, and I believe it could be used with a high lift jack.  I wouldn't want them to stick out any further since I am already dragging my leg on the sill when I get in or out.

Oh, and I would want 3X2" rails, 3/16" wall.

I might even think of going with 2x4 3/16" rock rails fo like protection of side bashing

Would you guys be concerned with the weight of the rails?

I prefer a 2"x2" with a extended bar like AJ's super rails. Makes it easier to get the roof rack and more side body protection also a step for my daughter to get in and out.

3/16" is plenty 1/4" is overkill and way too heavy.

It really depends on what type of wheeling your planning on doing. I'm personally going to go with a setup similar to what Jeff just posted simply for the fact that the "protrusion" (SP?) out keeps tree's off my body as I do a lot of tight trails. That protrusion will push the XJ away from a tree instead of denting my doors etc.

Zactly!

I have JCR's stage 2's and love them.  I still have door handles and mirrors!

I love using them as a piviot point on a tree, works great. I've beat the tar out of them and they still look like new.(Other than the paint scrapes)

Not to hi-jack, but does anyone know anybody who makes MJ rock rails? I've been told that XJ ones will not work on the MJ, is that true?

I see AJ offers his rails in either 3/16" or 1/8" any preference in these or experience.

If I may......

1/4" is way too heavy, there is a bit of engineering behind all this good stuff believe it or not, a 1/8th inch wall structure divided within the proposed in square inches provides a great deal of strength, stepping up to 3/16" wall about tops it off, seeing as it's typically 3-4 times the structural strength of the unitbody itself.......Without going into heavy details, the Detours system surpasses the standard mounting system by providing a unitbody structure which out performs standard rail systems......period.

3/16"Slyders are available upon request, its not an issue....
