Indiana Statewide Trails Plan Meetings

Mark your calendars to attend a meeting. Give the state government your input on creating an off-road trail in the northern half of the state similar to what they have done with Redbird. Below I have copied an email from George Thomas (Environmental Affairs - Indiana Four Wheel Drive Association)

Tues May 31, 2006 I spent the day at the Government Center in Indianapolis.
What was I doing there. Trying to get us more trails that we can drive on. Where? Right here in the state of Indiana. It was a fun day and yes the governor was there. Yes I was representing all 4WD users, even the one's that don't belong to IFWDA. It was the 2006 Trails plan Summit. It was a very interesting day and a lot of information was exchanged. Ours lasted all day and we even got a free lunch. This is something that needs everyone opinion, and they have asked me to ask you to attend a short meeting with them somewhere. Here is where!

The Indiana Trails Plan Hits the Road

We know not everyone involved with the trails around the state was able to be with us today. To give those people a chance for some input on the trails plan, we are hosting regional open houses though out the state. We hope that you will pass along the dates and times to people throughout your region and get them excited, to give their input on The Indiana Statewide Trails Plan.

(All times are local.)

June 15: 6-8 pm: Clifty Inn, Clifty Falls State Park
2221 Clifty Drive, Madison, In 47250

June 20: 6-8 pm: Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area, Conference Room
4320 W. Toto Road, North Judson, Indiana 46366

June 22: 6-8 pm: The Garrison, Fort Benjamin Harrison
6002 N Post Rd, Indianapolis Indiana 46216

June 27: 6-8 pm: Franke Park, Pavilion 1, Fort Wayne
3411 Sherman Blvd. Fort Wayne, Indiana 46805

June 29: 6-8 pm Surgar Ridge Fish and Wildlife area, Conferense Room
2310 East SR 364, Winslow, Indiana 47598

As you can see the are doing a lot of traveling in a lot of different areas
in a short period of time. Your thoughts are very important to them and they are trying to let you be heard. Please try to attend the one nearest you. I received more information at the summit than what I gave. Let me Assure you Governor Mitch Daniels is on our side, and of course for trails in general. They are planning on having a bunch of new ones over a period of time, voice your opinion now for your
area. The summit was put on by IDNR & IDOT something is going to happen, let them know what you want. Thank You!

George Thomas

Just a little information from someone who has been fighting these "trails" groups for 10 years.

While I agree a offroad park would be nice, most of this trails stuff is nothing but a land grab by "non" profit" organizations.  They wish to gain control of abandoned railbeds for bike paths, light rail/bus routes.  According to Indiana State law these abandoned railbeds are supposed to revert back to the adjoining landowners.

These trails groups have been able to convince some at IDNR, and INDOT that these "transportation corridors" as they call them should be taken by the State, thru emminent domain, and turned over to the groups for their bike paths, etc...  Suddenly these "non profit" groups contact the fiber optic companies and grant them permission to lay cables, and such, FOR A PROFIT.  So much for being a "non profit" group, huh?  They pay for all this with the taxes collected on gasoline, and apply for it thru the Federal Government.  The group we have fought with LIED on their application to the Federal Government about who owned the land.

A little background on all this.  The abandoned railbed is behind my house.  The "trail" would be about 80-90 feet from my backdoor.  I purchased the lot because of the treeline that would be behind it.  All this would be gone if/when they are able to put this trail in.  They make claims that the trails do not add to, or cause crime.  NOT TRUE, a call placed to the IPD about the Monon Trail showed us the opposite.  The way they can claim this is because the trail has no address, any crime commited on the trail is given the closest home's address.  Nifty way to hide it huh?  These trails give criminals a direct route to and from neighborhoods where they weren't before.  There are all kinds of perverts that have been spotted on the Monon, robberies, perverts flashing women/kids, etc... They also have been seen using the trail to video tape houses, and have used them for planning robberies.

I for one do not want some people to have a direct route from downtown Indianapolis to my house on the westside.  That is why I don't live downtown.  Homeowners here made that very clear, but these trails groups don't care what you want, they are intent on their pet project.  And that is all it is, wanting State/Federal monies to pay for their hobby, and making a profit while doing it.  When all this came to light here back in 2/96, not a single homeowner here was EVER contacted in anyway. They were determined to sneak this by us, and we caught them at it.  Needless to say they weren't happy with us.

Just be careful what you wish for.  The vast majority of this trails thing is nothing but a land grab.  For more info, Google "Rails to Trails".  This is being fought all over the country.

The majority of the talk was about a statewide BIKE trail plan.

I among others were under the false impression it was for vehicals.

Adam, kinda figured that is what it would be about.  Gov. Daniels just talked about putting up state monies to fund these types of projects, so look out!

In these peoples sunny, 72 degree dream world they live in we all will be merrily peddleing our bikes wherever we go.  And trample on private property rights in the process.
