I just have stock rims on my XJ.  My question is not how to paint them, because there are tons of threads on this, my question is whether I have to take the tire off of the rim or can I just tape the tire and go from there?  Thanks

Tape,

I saw a guy use playing cards by slipping enough of them between the tire and wheel. Worked well.

yeah, a lot of the ricers out there use that method. if you were to use the card method, i would think it would make things easier if you would air down the tire quite a bit.

I belive Dupicolor makes a good wheel paint in a spray can.

You can also coat the tire with vaseline.  It will prevent the paint from sticking to the tire.  And it will wipe right off when your done and leave your tires looking pretty and clean.

The vasalene, even if it does sound "dirty" lol, is probably one of the best ideas I've heard for that in a while. My stock 5-spoke standard steelies are gettin a little rust. Ought to fix em up a bit come spring.
