i was driving around tonight with some friends, and they were laughing at my spedometer because recently it's started randomly jumping around like crazy at it's own will, anywhere from 0 all the way to 85, no matter what speed i'm doing... it'll just jump around and do whatever.. i just left it though because it would stay still long enough to see how fast i was going.. well tonight, i was going to my friends house to hang out and my gas guage which was in the red area down by E decided to start going up to full.. well i parked it in his driveway and was at his house for a while, and when i got back in the jeep and started driving away, my gas guage needle was up near the 3 o clock position (i have the big gas guage where F is around 1 oclockish) my spedometer was stuck at 0, no bouncing around or anything anymore, and best of all, my odometer didnt move an inch and the drive home was a good 4-5 miles... my headlights, foglights, blinkers, and all that still work, but my guage cluster seems pretty ****ed... any ideas??
1993 4x4 5 speed, with the 2.5l engine if anyone needs to know.. mileage at last count was 264,554

you might want to pull the cluster anf clean the contact really good, some very fine emery cloth of a rubber eraser works well, like the old train or electric car track!

I think you might need a new speedometer cable if you had the jerky needle then no speed/mileage tht the cable wore out & broke. But, if the other stuff is F'd up too, I'd say contacts on the cluster, it's pretty easy to pull. Also check underneath for where the cable goes into the t-case & see if anything's loose.
If you pull the cluster, spray some lube down the speedo/odo cable sheath. See if you can pull it out of the tube/sheath.
okay, pulled the instrument panel off, and on the back there's 2 plugs, one i'm assuming is for the odo, gas guage, idiot lights, and speedo., and the other is for my lights on the left.. the wires go up into the back of the dash (to where, idk) so if someone could give me some ideas as to where i'd be looking either in the engine bay, or on the tranny/t-case (wherever the speed sensor or cable is?) it would be much appreciated... i know a lot of you guys probably have autos, but if you could find something for my manual tranny it'd be awesome.. i'm looking around as well..

i pulled the sensor (or what i thought was the sensor) from the t-case, put a drill on the gear to spin it, and nothing.. i dont have a voltometer to check for power, because apparently ours is fried, but yeah... still nothing, odometer still wont move, speedometer still wont move, and the gas guage is still wayyy past full..

i think mines electric... there's no cables.. there's a gear, a sensor, and an electric wire running somewhere to the front of the jeep (still have to follow it to see where it goes and scope out any possible problems.. ) i've already pulled the cluster, an the contacts on the 2 plugs are good, so i'm thinking it's either the sensor or the wiring somewhere..

alright, so i got underneath her today with a voltometer, and out of the speed sensor plug and the fuel pump plug (the only real "guages" i have on my instrument cluster) it's only reading 2.6 volts or so... i havent checked the instrument panel plug yet, but 2.6 seems a little low... so if that tells anyone anything at all or whatnot idk, but i'm still looking for any help/ideas!

so, kind of a new update on her... i ended up fiding a boneyard instrument cluster... mine was a pain in the ass to find.. the one with the idiot lights, no tach, and no trip odo... but anyways, the new cluster didnt fix my problems so i folded and took her to a dealership... 3 days later i find out that she pretty much stumped their best electrician.. he fixed a crapload of other wiring problems, but still, i have no working guages... they did say however that my speed sensor was filling with fluid.. lol so i bought a new one today, and am gonna install it tomorrow.. they said that should fix the problem with the speedo, but i'm not getting my hopes too high.. lol anyways, hopefully i can get this thing figured out...
