Steering Wheel Wont Centre After Wheel Alignment

Hi guys,

I need help. I had a minor accident with my 96 Country RHD. Most of the damage was underneath and i had to change the tie rods as well as the ends. also changed the steering box.

The problem is that after having the wheels aligned the steering wheel fails to centre and is tilted towards the right. i have tried to centre the steering wheel severally but am still not successful. The problem is that the tie rod and the tie rod end meet inside the adjustment sleeve before the steering wheel gets centred.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

if its that bad off, have you considered removing the steering wheel and recentering it? I have done this a few times on older non airbag vehicles and it worked, you should get some help to find center of lock to lock then center wheel then adjust the linkage.good luck. pretty bad 9 looks and i was the first one to offer any suggestions

i dont think the pitman arm trick will work! isnt it keyed or a set spline?

thanks guys for your replies. The pitman arm wont work as its set on a particular spline. same with the steering wheel. it can only be inserted in one direction only i.e. there is a particular spline for the steering wheel and thus cant be adjusted at that point.

i tend to think there is something wrong with the suspension but i dont know what. any ideas out there please?

Ed.

you may have bent the draglink/tierod? if the wheel ids that far out and you are out of adjustment. I wasnt sure on the steering wheel thing with the xjs. If it were me i would do this. drop all steering linkage from xj except the pitman arm, make wheels straight , make steering wheeel straight. then start adjusting stuff to fit it correctly. you may have one item at its most setting taking all the adjustment from elsewhere.

good luck

I forget what it's called, but it's a bar that goes left-right, if yours has a skidplate it's right above the back of it. Loosen the ~13mm bolts and turn the sleeve with a vise-grip. Once steering wheel is recentered, retighten bolts.
