Ya. It might not be too bad if you wait until you are out of gas. When I did it the gauge said that it was empty. Turns out that the gauge was broken and it was almost full.... After spilling gas everywhere and trying to climb out from under 10-12 gallons of gas in the tank we then had to sifen(know that spelling is rong) the rest. Not to fun.

I know on ours (early models) they are not in the tank. They are located about 12" away from the pump mounted up on the frame rail on the drivers side.
ya aci... your thinking of the pump/sock we put in the '94. The actual filter on my '88 and '94 is in-line and just above the axle. Easy to change. Though all that old gas sure was fun to play with, and breath in.

mine's the same place... appears to be easy to swap in a new one (hastings, baldwin, wix, or napa gold)
