So, my 96 XJ almost has 200k original miles on it, and I noticed that once it warms up the temp gauge goes from ~220 and drops to ~180 and slowly rises to 220, then fairly quickly drops again. This happens in town, at 45mph, 55mph, and 60mph.
I'm thinking a coolant flush and new t-stat is in order. Any other ideas, or have you had a similar problem but it turned out to be something else? Thanks! -Matt

i know this is probably a given, but check your fluid level first. very low levels can cause "air pockets" in the system and cause the gauge to fluctuate sometimes. if not that, then probably it's just the thermostat..... could be a sensor though too i guess.
