Ok, yesterday I drove the XJ for about 30 min. Turned it off to walk inside my parents house; came back out and it wouldn't start. It almost seemed like the battery was almost dead. All the lights were dimming with attempting to start it and there was a tick, tick, tick fast, coming from the steering colomn( not the starter, or if it was it doesn't sound like anyother bad starter I have heard). So we thought, we'll jump it. Hook it up to cables and it would turn over but not idle at all. It was like it was not fuel injected and the motor was cold. I had to put my foot on the gas and keep it there to get it to start and stay running. At this point we were like screw it we will take another car. We unhooked the cables and were getting in my dad's truck and I thought I will try it one more time. Fired up and ran fine. So we took the Jeep. Drove to the bottom of the drive (150 yards) and then it died again. This time it started right back up and ran fine for the rest of the day, even after I let it sit for 3hrs during a b-ball game. This morning I go to start it and it was just like it was not fuel injected again. I had to sit in it for prolly 5 min and keep it at 2k rpms to keep it going. After it would idle by itself I let it run for another 10 min before we left and no problems. So my question is what is wrong? Fuel pump? I ahve also been told that the battery might be old, but that wouldn't have effected the idle at cold would it? It got a tune up when I bought it about 4 months ago (new pugs, wires). So anyone got suggestions because it isn't even that cold yet. Although we have had TONS of ice and both today and yesterday it could have been possible that ice had gotten somewhere. Also the engine has been running cold for some reason. It runs half way between 100 and 210 on the gauge. I figured it was because of the cold weather but might have something to do with this now that I think about it. Will be throwing some cardboard up front shortly.
Sorry for the length of this. Thank you in advance for suggestions.

I miss the days that they made toys that could kill a kid.
A bad alt. (or battery) will caues it to do that. I had a bad alt. after a wheeling trip and we had to stop every 30 miles to charge my bat up to keep the Jeep running so I could get home. They XJ's are funny when it comes to voltage. If I recall corectly if I was under 9volts it would die (or run like crap) on me.
First thing I'd do is take it to AutoZone and have them run a bat. and alt. test on it to see if it's bad.
Also with it being sooo cold lately it could be water in your fuel. Did you recently put gas in it and it started doing this?
Well after it did it the first time I started to pay more attention to the voltage meter that is in the dash and it always reads right in the middle. As to the bad gas I did not think about that, I don't drive it all that much except for in the bad weather so I don't recall exactly the last time I bought gas or if Jeanette did.
Can autozone check the alt and batter in the car or do I have to take it out? I know that they can check out of the car but I don't want to have to take it out if I don't have to.

i'm kinda with Adam on this one, sounds like it could be two separate issues. A: the battery getting old...maybe. B: water in the gas. i've had vehicles act and run rough like that and i threw some Heet in and cleared it up...
just my 2 cents
(oh, fyi, wanna see how crappy some gas is these days? get a glass jar and fill it half way or so with gas and put a lid on it and let it sit for quite a while.)

what happens? is it just silty? I've seen 'fuel filters' that look like giant automotive oil filters (or an oil filter off a Detroit series 60) in the bottom of the gas pumps before, but dunno if they do much.

Well, took it over to Autozone and they hooked it up to the machine. They said that the kid that put the stereo in the XJ with subs and stuff didn't upgrade the alt. causing it to slowly fail. Its not broke yet but on its way out. Sooooo.... looks like I will be upgrading to a 120 amp. alt. here soon.

That was why I didn't call, and I left it to him to call ME back. He didn't have to respond, but as it turns out he can't stay off the internet even while on his honeymoon.
