Junkyard find - what you think?

Well i just got back from looking around the junkyard and wanted to know what you guys thought about a set of axles. It is out of a late 80's early 90's xj with the 4cyl and an auto tranny. I know that it would be the dana 30 in the front but it looks like a dana 44 cause it doesn't look anything like by 35. They both have 4.56 gears in them and they want $500 for both of them. Do you think this is a good deal or should i just pass on them? Let me know what you think. Also if somebody could post up a pic of what a dana 44 should look like that would be great so i can make sure it is one before i do anything on it.

Thanks,
Ben

if it is a Dana 44, i would say buy the pair.  Especially with 4.56s.  I just bought a Dana 44 w/ 3.07s from the local JY for $300.

Well i might head back out there tomarrow and make sure that it is a 44. Would hate to get it and find out it is only a 35. But with the little wheeling i do a 35 mite be alrite. You think. Then again i am going up to a set of boggers here soon so may not be a good idea.

depends on the size of boggers. 31s might be alright, but not 33s

I am getting a set of 31x12.50x15 boggers here soon. Thats what kinda got me thinking about the 35 i have in the xj now. Do you know if the dana 44 is a direct swap or is there things that i would have to do to it? Reason i ask is i don't really have access to welder or anything.

no welding is required. it should bolt right in. it does on the MJ so im not 100% sure on a XJ

I highly doubt that it's a 44 based on the fact it's a 4 banger under the hood. I'd almost say that I'm 100% sure it's not but won't. evileye

Even if it was, $500 for the set of axle's isn't a killer deal even in my opinion...

Take a pic of it and post it, I'll be able to tell ya what it is.

whoa, i didn't even realize it had a 4 cyl. i thought it had a 6. in that case, it doesn't have a 44 unless somebody put it in.

Well after looking around on other sites and not finding any info about xj's with 4 bangers having 44's in the rear, it still mite have a dana 35 or 8.25 right? Would this still be a deal even tho it's probably not a 44?

The 8.25" was used starting in '91, however it's still only the 27 spline shafted one. They changed to the 29 spline in '97. The 27 spline 8.25" is only a tad better than the D35.

So no, not worth $500 for a D30/D35 combo or a D30/27 spline 8.25" combo.

For $500 you can put a much better axle in the rear (D44 or 8.8 or 9") and possiably even a Aussie Locker....

D44s are good stuff... also found under a lot of Ford F150s, not sure how easy a swap it would be, likely have to do some welding.
