me and a friend decided to do a little wire chasing tonight to figure out my guage cluster problem... some of you might remember it, but about a year ago, my speedo started freaking out, then i lostmy gas, speedo, and odometer guages and they've been out ever since... i took it to a dealership, they told me all the voltages and everything were fine and couldnt find a problem, they had it for 3 days and had no clue... i did some of my own work on it, but could never figure it out.. anyways, i dealt with it up until tonight, my friend came over, we were bored, and so we decided to look in the downloadable .pdf xj service manual, and found what might be the problem wire.. we followed it from the dash all the way into the engine bay, and found a frayed and broken ground just hanging there.. stripped it off, grounded it in a better place (where the main ground is from the firewall to the block), got in, turned the jeep on, and the guages worked!! i'm excited as hell, and now can continue my counting up to 300,000 miles (it's probably at or over that already, but my odo wasnt counting for a year, so yeah...) anyways, thank god for the pdf manual, and a friend that can read schematics (i sure as heck cant)...
anyways, merry xmas everyone, and thanks for listening to my rambling..

i'll take a pic soon, actually i'll do it in a couple mins... looking at the schematics though, it seems this fix might only be for the low line cluster (i have the 2.5 with idiot lights) at any rate, it's good to know..

alright, so what to do if your guages dont work, your speedo freaked out for a little bit, and your gas guage is pegged over... pics were taken with a cell phone, but it should be clear enough to tell what you're looking at..
step 1: park jeep so you can get yourself under it.. just in case..
step 2: find green and black wire coming from guages (should be packed inside a main wire cluster above pedals)
step 3: follow green and black wire to a plug (you cant see it in the back, but it's pretty much right behind the rubber boot in your firewall for your wires that go in/out)
step 4: find the black and orange wire going out the backside of the plug and through the firewall, follow black and orange wire out into the engine bay.. once it gets into the engine bay it goes up into the main wire clusters and towards the passenger side..
step 5: the wire comes out of the cluster just to the left of the engine and goes pretty much straight down
step 6: you should find it in the little gap to the passenger side of the engine down by the dipstick/oil filter... mine was just hanging out down there...
step 7: i pulled the wire up and out of the other group of wires it was tied together with and ran it back towards the drivers side.(it's the black with orange stripe one)
step 8: i grounded wire on the engine block with the main ground..
step 9: enjoy working guages.... and this wonderful pic of my mess of an engine bay..
hope this helps at least a couple people if your guages ever take a crap..
