I love Wranglers don't get me wrong. My friend has one and it is great, nothing is better than taking the roof off and the doors and just driving around in the summer. I have never driven one off road (my buddy is to much of a chicken, even though he will come and wheel my XJ ) so I can't compare them there.
That being said, wranglers ride horrible. That is one of the few reasons that my wife will not buy one (it was going to be her vehicle of choice for a first car until she rode in one, don't worry I'm still trying to get her in one and out of her Rav4). They also ONLY ride 4 people, 2 SMALL people in the back, with little to NO trunk space, specially if you take the top off, it takes all the trunk space to hold the rear windows.
I don't want to make any stock XJ's mad on here, but I think that a Wrangler looks much better stock than a XJ. But then when you upgrade a Wrangler they still look pritty much the same. You upgrade an XJ and it looks freaking awsome. You put an upgraded XJ next to a stock XJ and they look completely different.
I think that on the trail, stock, both the XJ and the Wranglers are close to the same stock. Once you start upgrading it will be hard to compare them because both rigs built properly are awsome.
I think that wranglers have so much more available to them, and are so much more popular because they have been going since the CJ at least and have not really changed their looks since then. So people can go and re-buy their first car. They have made almost a religous following.
Welp I'm done. Feel free to tear what was just said apart.

My 1 st JEEP was a 1984 CJ 7, I love that JEEP , And taking the Doors and top off in the summer was sweet, But it was a rough riding Son of a gun, I love the way my XJ rides, I want to get some better shocks for it then what came with the Rough Country Lift System, But im still lost on what to get, I looked @ the Bilstein 5150's.
Only problem is that the Comanche has a "big butt" that sticks further out than the XJ does, thus why we're always dragging our bumpers (or bumper mounts in my case).
I like the XJ because of it's longer wheelbase than the cj, yj, tj. I always go back to the qoutes I heard from a mildly built CJ owner a couple of years ago on a bright early morning in line for the Orange trail at the Badlands. He Said "Oh great, I'm gonna have to pull this Cherokee around all day". At the end of the day I heard this "Man I can't believe you made it thru that trail with no strap, that thing is pretty cool". Gotta Love Em.
Yeah, Wranglers are definitely way pricier. Doesn't make much sense to me, it's not like they have a different engine or anything, and I don't think that the parts they use cost as much as the price tag would have you believe. Not to mention they get worse gas mileage. I also wasn't aware of the ride quality. Kinda seems backwards that it costs more.
But, wouldn't it be easier to get an XJ high centered?
If you are wanting to buy one, I would definetly take one for a test drive. The newer ones might ride better, I don't know, my buddy's is a 91 I think. The ride is not THAT bad, it just is noticably worse than an XJ. It is like driving an old pickup truck.
