Question for MJ owners

Im found a 89 2wd MJ with a 2.5L and 4 speed manual. My question is about power off road. Will the 2.5L be enough to keep up with the 4.0L on trails?

Id have to find a donor XJ or MJ for the transfer case and find a front axle. ( Any one who has completed this please PM me)

If the 4 cyl is gonna do fine then i might try and get it.

I've seen the little four "squirrel motor" perform very well in offroad applications, from a guy who used to work where I work who uses a YJ as a DD/hunting truck and more 'extreme' applications and they do okay. Some of it is gearing to compensate for having less torque than the six (so instead of running 4.10 gears and 33" rubber with the inline six, you'd run 4.50 gears with the same rubber spun by the four cylinder)

Adam, i was wondering if yours was a 4 cyl.

Any one want to help me with a 2wd to 4wd conversion?

My old MJ I did a 4.0L swap in it and converted it from 2wd to 4wd. It's "kinda" easy...

I think ill stick with the 2.5L and gear it accordingly. It will have to be streetable until i get a tow rig and trailer, then its trail only.

I have 2 axles that were pulled out of an XJ laying around.  I know that the rear is a Dana 35, I think.  I would assume that the front is a 35.  Adam this is the one that you were looking at when looking for a 44.  Do you remember what exactly they were?  Anyways you had mentioned needing axles.  I am willing to let these go pritty cheap.  Let me know.

All XJ's/MJ had a Dana 30 front. The rear that you had was a Dana 35.

I do not recall if the D30 was the vacume disco one or not; it would depend on what year it came out of and also if it was a NP231 or NP242 transfer case.

I'm not sure of the gearing either, as I did not look that good at them as I was looking for a D44 and once I noticed that they were a d30/d35 combo I didn't look any further.

As long as the gears match that would be good. I guess that leaves transfer case, trans and drive shafts. I need to get the MJ before i get the axles though.

The axles were both from the same XJ so the gearing should be the same.  I don't know what that gearing is but it should be the same.
