Question for MJ owners

What kind of work? Free is my favorite price!

Side note... Can anyone recommend an inexpensive, but more importantly complete, 4-5 or 6-7 in lift for an 89 'manche?

I bet it is! But its a little more expensive than i have. Can anyone point me to some parts to lift the front about 5 or 6 inches? Ill just SOA the rear.

Edit: Ill just put a list of things i think i need, anyone feel free to tell me other wise on any item.
~5-6in lift coils for XJ/MJ
~gonna get Motionoffroads crossover steering (do i need a drop pitman arm?)
~extended brake lines, front and rear
~upper and lower control arms; i need suggestions here
~trackbar and brace; suggestions?

Can anyone also tell me where to get a bolt on kit for the rear OSA and how much itll run?

im not actually sure if its bolt in or not. but since ur talking a trail only rig, u may want to step up to a D44 up front.

Did you look at what all is contained in the MotionOffroad MJ lift kit? I hate to tell you, but you probably aren't going to find a better set up than that! It has everything you need, minus shocks, including the crossover steering setup.

I'd save up for this kit, if you want to do it right.

Here is my thoughts on going anything over 5" of lift on an MJ or XJ.

Longarms have nothing to do with what type of wheeling you do. Better flex is just a by-product of having them. At that height (6.5") your control arm angle's are just way to steep and the ride will suffer greatly. Additionally if you ever try to go over anything, your jeep will be pushing itself over the axle, not pushing the axle forward with it. Having your control arms at that angle (short-arms) at that height your putting more abuse on your uni-body and just asking for trouble down the road.

You should never have to use a drop pitman arm. DPAs should ONLY be used if you're lowering the trackbar mount on the frame, or raising it on the axle, otherwise it will CAUSE bumpsteer. The whole belief that you need a drop pitman arm with a lift has been perpetuated from the days of leaf sprung vehicles without trackbars. On these vehicles you wanted to keep the angle of the draglink as flat as possible to minimize bumpsteer. On vehicles with a trackbar, you want to keep the draglink as parallel to the trackbar as possible to minimize bumpsteer. With a DPA, your making it worse. A dropped pitman arm will also increase the amount of torque/axial loading on the shaft your steering box experiences.

As far as the steering goes, it's not the fact that the cross-over steering is heavy duty; it's the fact that the angles at 6.5" with the steering suck. Flex out your stock steering at that height and it's going to bind. You'll have several issues with the steering at that height if you keep it stock.

The MO kit looks to have addressed everything needed to lift your MJ 6.5" and do it correctly.

I do want to do this right the first time so i will save for the MO deal. I think ill do the 4wd conv while im saving for the lift.

As the saying goes: Anything worth doing, is worth doing right.

Adam, What are youre axle on the MJ?

1. don't do hackjobs or spare any expense on higher lifts.
2. use a 1995 or earlier transfer case, they have a longer back part and reduces driveline vibes when they are lifted. My XJ is a 1996 and has a stubby shaft coming out of the back a few inches and it has vibes at certain speeds (not bad but noticeable and the gf doesnt like it). I'm looking into either shims or a good condition used tcase from an earlier year. I only have 2" of lift, so I don't need as many parts and stuff. Start small and spend money on wheeling your rig first, then decide what you want.
finally. Have fun!

I am SOA in the rear with my D44 and i dont have a SYE. I do have a homemade t-case drop which isn't really the answer but it stoped the minimal vibes and is WAY cheaper.

Wade, do you have to worry about the shaft droppin out with that setup?

Anyone know a cheap way to add power steering to this? Just found out its manual steer.

No way. it would be next to impossible for the shaft to come out of the t-case

 1. buy a Jeep XJ that has a blown engine for cheap.

2. pull the steering parts (including pump!) and front driveline and tcase (for the 4x4 swap out of it.  Use the rest as a backyard parts store, a place to sleep when the wife gets upset, or part it out some more.

3. pull the front axle and manual steering stuff out of your Jeep. Probably everything from the steering box (where the steering wheel shaft goes) down needs to be removed.

4. Install power steering and front driveline off 4x4 Jeep.  Also swap the rear driveshaft since with a tcase, you'll need a shorter driveshaft.

5. Make sure you have fluid in the steering, everything works, and go Jeepin!

The same guy the has the MJ im looking at also has a XJ that 'quit running one day'. 4.0,AX15,NP231 for $600(more than the MJ that runs) If the guy ever PMs me back, i think i have a 231 for cheap, just needs new seals and bearings, (its tore apart so im gonna look real close to see why it needs bearing)

Sidenote...I dont really need a "doghouse" cause i dont have a wife...i dont even have a girlfriend.cry
