Some of you know, im trying to get an MJ soon. Im trying to work out a plan for when this pup becomes a trail only rig.
Anyone run or know anything about running a spool or mini-spool? I will more than likely put it in a 8.8 Im choosing a spool over a lock due to the lower price.
EDIT: After some research, i think i might go with a D44 instead...

i am running the Dana 44 but with a detroit locker. i have never run a spool so i can't answer your question. i do know that i was running a limited slip before the locker and haven't looked back since i changed.
I've thought about running a spool in the rear with an Aussie locker in the front.
Spools are stronger than welding the spiders, and I'd even be willing to say stronger than 95% of the lockers on the market. Just don't run one on the road, and use it on trail-only rigs and you'd be fine.
I'm not going to run one in the front for the simple fact that I want to have the better turning radius.
I don't know a lot about the spools however, the always just tend to have a bad rap as people try to run them on the road as well...
Chris, Since you don't have a lot of trail experience, I'd recommend making the Jeep streetable with a performance limited slip (rather than a tired factory unit) or other pavement friendly unit until you get something to be a daily driver for you then go with the spool. Better yet, save yourself some cash and time by getting the spool and don't install it until you get a DD and are ready to make the Jeep a trail ride. Just my suggestion to help you not spend a lot of time and money on something and thinking 'man, I should have built it milder'.
Kind of like the guy who builds a big v8 for his musclecar, and puts in a racing cam that spits raw fuel out of the exhaust. Sure it sounds cool and hauls balls at the track, but it sucks to cruise around town in. Had the guy built it milder and more streetable, it'd be more enjoyable around town, less expensive to build, and better on fuel. Just my two dollars lol... yes I am making fun of myself! (I have a sense of humor).
In the end, make sure you build it and have fun with it!

As far as a DD, i already have that. My sonoma is my everyday driver until i get this F250 im looking at, but even then ill still have it. I read somewhere about not gettin a locker right off the bat because the open diffs act like 'training wheels' and could help keep me from gettin in over my head. I might do that.
Thanks for the concern though! Ill keep that in mind.

I'd go with the locker then if the Jeep is to be a trail only vehicle. Best of luck with the F250! My gf's grandpa has a '95 dually diesel and likes it a lot. Onto them, the 7.3 diesel is an excellent engine, and the 351 gasser is a proven engine as well. I'm not 100% confident in the OHC v8s in big heavy vehicles (they're good in lighter vehicles though) and the 6.0 diesel had its share of issues. The new diesel is unproven as of yet but appears promising.
