xj cb question...

i recently hooked up a cb to my xj, i put the mount on top of the rear bumper, on the drivers side (i removed the plastic end caps so the mount is hanging off the side of the bumper.) i have been trying to tune my antenna, and cannot for the life of me get the SWR to a decent level it always reads high... i'm thinking it could potentially be due to the fact that most of the antenna (it's a 5.5 footer) is within a few inches of the hatch and whatnot, and i only have about 30% of it sticking out over the xj... anyways, is there any other place i could throw a mount back there that wouldnt be too high? i know i could go up to the roof, but i really dont want it that high, otherwise with the mount i have my only other option for back there is mounting it onto the the taillight housing.. my problem with that is i'd have to use screws and would be unable to bolt it on, and dont know how well that would hold up...

any suggestions or anything anyone has that i could try? i have 2 heavy duty springs to raise it (channel 40 reads lower than 1 on the swr) and even that doesnt cut it... and i dont really have any spare metal laying around to make any kind of decent shims for underneath the mount...

Try taking off the antenna from the bumper and just hold it somewhere to see if you can get it to tune better.  If it doesn't tune better, then where you are mounting it is not you problem, and something else is. That is what I would do first if you really don't want to move it.

The antenna needs to be grounded good. If your putting it on your stock bumper it may simply not be grounding correctly.

I saw some nice looking mounts (mounts just above the stock taillights on the outer side of the XJ) on ebay... dunno if they're there anymore.

update...
checked ebay, they had none.  see links for more  info on cbs and jeeps.  Sorry if they're repeats, but it's late and I worked 12 1/2 hours today.blankstare
