MPG with stock XJ?

Well we have a baby coming in a few months and the topic of vehical's has once again come up.

Rebecca has her XJ, which will be fine. However my DD is a 2 door BMW with a rollcage in it yawn....

So plan is to sell it, and sell her old car and try to get me into something else. Yes I do have my XJ, but it really is not the best DD. I put around 30K in over a 6 month period so gas is a factor. Thats the nice thing about my BMW as it gets fairly good gas milage.

So we've been talking about what we should get. I need something with 4 doors due to the baby (I did the baby thing with 2 doors for awhile and it's NO fun!). Being that we like our XJ's so much, it's crossed my mind to pick up a 97-99 in stock form and just DD that. I know it's a brick on wheels...

So my question is, those of you with a 4.0L HO that is stock (no lift and normal sized tires), what kind of MPG are you getting? I know a few tricks to get the MPG better, but I'm just looking for an average on what you guys are getting so I know what to base it on.

TIA!

Go find a manual XJ.  The one that MystickfireXJ drives get almost 20mpg and that is with 3" lift and 31's.  I think that it was getting 22 before that.

I was getting 18 or so on the freeway. Could have probably hit 19-20 if I slowed down a bit. In tow mileage is probably closer to 16 or so.

I drove a stock 2000 classic for a while and it was getting 18 to 22 depending how I drove it.

i know you're partial to the XJ but with the miles you put on and the price of gas i think if i were in your position i would look for a 4 door car that gets 30mpg easily. some of the foreign automakers have some really nice rides out there right now for much cheaper than the US Big 3 companies.  just my 2 cents.

alot of the foreign automakers are in bed with, or onwed by the big three. I'd look at Mazda. Friends of ours drive nothing but them. Oh ya their cheap used and still a good price new ( If your into that ) . Plus you can get 30+ mpg.
Thats what would sell me.
