I just did this. You can get up and running just by swapping the transfer case. You will want to swap the shifter gate (shifters are the same) for the detents to work properly. I also had to swap the VSS modules because 242 had 2 wires, and the 231 had 3.

That it does, been putting it to use all winter. These Mt/r's aren't the best in snow/ice and the full time really helps.
Spline count and input shaft length are the 2 things to look for. And if the 242 T-case input is different the 231 input is a direct swap for each other..
