RE: Doors off?

You could just unbolt the door side of hinge. Down side is you'll have to realign the doo to out it back on, and this my not be a one man job.

I always have someone around to help me work on the jeep so thats no problem if its a two person job. Is there any easy way to just pop the existing hinge pin in and out. Or would be easier to disconnect the bolts.

Does anyone know if its legal to have your doors off driving around town?

i have my doors off in indiana, i believe you just need to have one rear facing mirror on the outside. i grabbed a piece of flat metal and drilled two holes in it so it would bolt to the hinge. picked up a cheapie mirror from autozone to mount to the other end

IC 9-19-12-1
Safety requirements

Sec. 1. A motor vehicle that is constructed or loaded so as to obstruct the driver's view to the rear from the driver's position must be equipped with a mirror located so as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least two hundred (200) feet to the rear of the vehicle.

That is the only law in Indiana that says anything about rearview mirrors.  Therefor as long as you can turn around and look to the rear you don't need to have ANY rear view mirrors.  If the back is loaded down and you can't see out of it then you have to have an outside rearview mirror.

In regards to the Doorless question I have done extensive research on this and can not find anywhere that it says it is illegal in INDIANA to have the doors off.  I have also talked with Motor Carrier Inspectors (the gooroo's (sp?) when it comes to equipment laws on vehicles) and the only thing that they can come up with is that someone might be able to say that it is an "unsafe vehicle" without the doors.  But if it has seat belts, and they are being used, it would be hard for an officer to articulate not having the doors on as being unsafe.

Also I have NEVER heard of anyone EVER being stopped for having the doors off in Indiana.   I don't know anything about Ohio, Michigan, Illinios though, this info was stricktly for Indiana.

Did some research this morning:  OHIO

4513.23 Rear view mirror.

(A) Every motor vehicle, motorcycle, and trackless trolley shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the operator a view of the highway to the rear of such vehicle, motorcycle, or trackless trolley. Operators of vehicles, motorcycles, streetcars, and trackless trolleys shall have a clear and unobstructed view to the front and to both sides of their vehicles, motorcycles, streetcars, or trackless trolleys and shall have a clear view to the rear of their vehicles, motorcycles, streetcars, or trackless trolleys by mirror.

I would interpret this as saying that as long as you have a mirror on the windshield you should be fine, and that you don't NEED an outside mirror if you have an inside one.

I could also not find anything in Ohio's Law that said anything about having a vehicle doorless, so I don't know about that one.

Illinios:

(625 ILCS 5/12502) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12502)
Sec. 12502. Mirrors. Every motor vehicle, operated singly or when towing another vehicle, shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such motor vehicle.
(Source: P.A. 82122.)

Doesn't say anything about it being on the outside as long as you can see to the rear 200 feet.

Sec. 12607. Suspension System.
    (a) It shall be unlawful to operate a motor vehicle on any highway of this State when the suspension system has been modified from the original manufactured design by lifting the body from the chassis in excess of 3 inches or to cause the horizontal line from the front to the rear bumper to vary over 3 inches in height when measured from a level surface of the highway to the lower edge of the bumper, except that it is unlawful to operate a street rod or custom vehicle when the suspension system has been modified from the original manufactured design so that the horizontal line from the front to the rear bumper varies over 7 inches in height when measured from a level surface of the highway to the lower edge of the bumper.

Hey John, I don't know if you know this or not but I am an Indiana State Trooper.  I would say that if you ever got stopped for your doors being off it is actually for something else stupid that you are doing, and they were just looking for a reason to stop ya.  So, I would say if you want to take the doors off, go for it, but be smart while you have them off and you shouldn't have a problem with being hassled by the police.

Trust me I know what it means to be harrassed by the police.  My brother and I used to get stopped every friday night leaving the bowling alley in my home town because we drove a lincoln continental (black), that had Ft. wayne plates.  The would find some stupid reason to pull us over and search our car.  police.gif It stopped when they unjustifyably pulled a gun on me during one of the searches. shocked.gif Then my mom went crazy at the court house and we never got stopped again.  biggrin  We never had any drug, booze, or even cigarrettes on us, but they would still stop us every friday night.
