how much would i make off a part out?

just a general guestimate... i'm throwing up the idea of either selling the xj as a whole (nothing wrong, runs great, body's in bad shape) or just parting it out...

everything works and runs great except the rear ds is pretty much junk.  other than that, it's got a 2.5, ax5, d30hp, chry 8.25, np231, and all the other normal interior things... and 4 doors of which 3 are in good shape.

The problem with parting it out would be that you wouldn't get all your money at the same time.  Second is that you will have to store all of the stuff untill it is sold.

I hate to say it but you'll probally get more out of it selling it as it is.

The parts off of it are not worth a lot. The 2.5L won't go for more than $100, the 8.25" is the early 27 spline and won't go for more than $75-100. The NP231 probally $150. Plus just other misc. stuff that isn't worth more than a few hundred.

Now if it was better equipped (4.0L, 29 spline 8.25) etc. it may be worth it, but I don't feel yours is...

Take it for what it's worth. In my opinion 90% of the time you'll get more money for a running/driveable vehical than you would in parting it out.

yeah, it's kind of a toss up... mainly because it has 270k on the clock, and the body's in bad shape in a couple places... that's what i was worried about.

is the ax5 the early crappy renault 5speed, or the later 'medium duty' 5speed? I'd really like to get a later 'heavier duty' 5-speed swap into my XJ, but yours would provide lots of parts and a core to trade in.

This is planned for someday when I get another DD and get into a stroker buildup and while the engine is out, do a transmission swap.

long story short...
I'd like to buy it someday, until then, buy a better XJ for trail, and let this see the salt in the winter and get good mpg.  Someday when it takes a crap or whatever, sell it, maybe to me.

The Renix XJ/MJs had a weak transmission that didn't take heavy use well.  I think in the HO era they used a better unit, then in 97? they got an even stronger transmission for those who like to choose their own gears.

the ax5 was the "light duty" aisin tranny used... the 4.0 came with an ax15, which is the "medium duty" you speak of. lol i do have to say though, for the 2.5, it's a strong little guy, and i dont think it's on it's way out any time soon. i'm actually eyeing up an xj near here, it's a '98 with 80k on the clock, auto, 4.0, in pretty good shape. somethings wrong with it but i might offer 1,500 as is, and see if i can fix her up... then i'd have a nice trail rig :)

Where are you getting this info from?

The only thing that is even slightly true is the AW4 switched from 21 to 23 spline output in '91 (thats not even a Renix btw). However I've NEVER heard or seen anyone break an output shaft on an early AW4.

The rest of the tranny's are identical threwout the years besides the difference between the internal vs. external slave cyl. However that has NOTHING to do with the strength.
