Balljoint replacement

Well after my trip to haspin i believe that my ball joints are about shot. I have got a lot of thumping coming from the front end when i hit a bump or something. Does anybody know how hard it is to put in new ball joints? Is this something that i can do or should i take it in somewhere? Just trying to get it riding a little better before i get it on the road.

thanks,
Ben

Nevermind.  I was mistaking the balljoint for something else.  I have no clue the dificulty or input.  This post is worthless....

I looked in to replacing my ball joints while back (i never did go through with it). But if i remember correctly it takes a specail tool to intsall the new balljoints. My local mechanic was not even equiped to replace them. I looked all over the internet to try and find the tool and replace them myself, i never found one.I think that your best bet would be having your dealership take a look at it. I dont know if that was any help but i figured i would tell you anyway.

Yes they do require a special tool. AutoZone should have it to rent.

This writeup http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=9287 has nice pictures and explanations for the replacement of ball joints. Good luck.

Hate to hijack this thread, but I get clunks when I turn, when moving (sometimes) and they seem to occur every revolution of the tire or so... and when the steering wheel is returning to center it feels like the power steering is kicking on and off. I got a jks tracbar last year and everything underneath seems to be in good shape except my front ujoints arent nice and tight, so I wonder if this is the source of the noise... or not.

Hope I am not too late in responding. Ball joints are a pain, they can be done. The tool you need can be rented from autozone. Expect this to be an all day event with alot of banging
( the kind with a hammer) going on. I usually am able to work on my own jeep, but being a girl, I had to enlist the strength of my man for this particular job. Although it was a pain, it was well worth doing ourselves since it was alot cheaper. Good luck and if you have any questions I am willing to help as much as I can.
