My 91 buildup questions

Well once again i am going bigger with my xj. Now i just need some of your advise and expertise on what else i need to finish it off. I am going to add spacers and shackles to my rough country 4.5" kit to make it around 6-6.5" lift total. I just picked up a long arm kit that i know i will have to modify it a little cause it has heim joints at all the mounting locations.

My question is what would be a good track bar to use with this lift height that isn't going to drain my pocket book? Trying to do this on a budget. The xj is going to be on the road here soon so am thinking of doing a better steering setup also. If anyone has any idea as to what steering setup to get that would help.

Thanks,
Ben

RK Bombproof Tracbar is cheap - http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_30&products_id=126

Here is a good review on it. http://motionoffroad.wordpress.com/2008/05/07/rubicon-express-vs-rock-krawler-trackbar-shootout/

If you want "dirt cheap" Motion has thier 4.5-6.5" tracbars on scratch and dent for $119. - http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_30&products_id=381

As for steering myself and Andy both run the Motion 1-ton crossover setup. No problems yet and is super beefy and cheap. - http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=16

Maybe Andy will chime in no what he thinks about it.

Do you think the shocks would be alright with that lift height?

I'd have to say no, especially if your going to be running longarms.

I ran 4.5" shocks on 6.5" springs with my MJ and my front flex was very limited as I bottomed out my shocks quickly.

Now if your just going to be driving it on the road than you'll probally be ok; but if you plan on taking it offroad I'd get longer shocks. Especially with longarms as they won't function well with short shocks...

I run the 1 ton cross over steering setup like Adam stated, and love it.  I have had no problems with it at all.  I had death wobble hard core when I bought the XJ and put the 1 ton setup on it and a Rubicon Express Adj. Trac bar and have had no problems at all.

I will say if you are going to install these parts at the same time or how ever you want to do it, I would sugest installing the trac bar first and then the cross over steering next only because I did it opposite of that and the steering setup gets in the way and you can't take it off.  So put the trac bar on first and then the steering setup.

Can someone recommend a good set of shocks that would work good with a long arm setup?

for those with little lifts, ZJ shocks I've heard do a good job... otherwise I'm not sure, and haven't needed to replace them on my XJ yet.

As for brands, I like bilstein, they're firm and hold the road well, whereas monroe I've heard is a smoother ride but lacking in the roadholding department.

You'll want a set of long-travel shocks whatever you get.

Honestly the best thing to do is install the lift/longarms; than flex it out and measure the compressed and extended lengths'. Than go 2" longer than you measure and try to find a shock that fits those paramators. Buying shocks prior to actually measuring is a waiste in my opinion as they will hinder your flex as I'd be willing to say your "guess" in length will probally be wrong.
