My 99 buildup questions

I need help finding a good front bumper and a good lift kit.
i have done lifts in the past to trucks with full frames but not a Unibody and dont know where to start or what to get.

A couple of questions to start off with.

1) What size tires do you want to run?
2) What size lift are you wanting to run?
3) What are you going to be using your Jeep for?

With those answers we can probally be of more help recomending a lift kit for you.


I'd check out Motion; they are a supporting vendor on here. They have several options for both lifts and bumpers for the XJ.

You can fit 33's with 3.5" of lift if your willing to trim a little bit. Most however run 4.5" of lift with 33's.

We run the RE 3.5" SuperFlex kit with 33's on my wife's XJ and it's a daily driver. We prefer to keep the center of gravity low and bumpstop accordinly.

I'd recomend whatever you do go with a kit with new rear leaf packs and not add-a-leafs. You'll thank yourself later for doing so. Look into the 3.5" or 4.5" Rubicon Express Superflex kits. We've been very happy with the quality of the kit on Rebecca's XJ. Motion has them with free shocks and free shipping.

Only thing I'd recomend is contacting them and spending the extra few bucks and upgrading the trackbar to the heavy duty version. It's worth the extra $$ and it's a much better part than the trackbar that is included with the kit.

Motion set me up with a RE 4.5" superflex w/upgrades. Its the most complete kit avilable.
Once in hand the quality is unmatched. I will be running 33's but plan on 35's later.

whith that much lift would i need to get a new drive shaft or get a sye kit?

It all depends on the drive shaft thing.  I am at 5.5" and don't have SYE.  You will prolly have to extend the drive shaft at the least.  You can do a transfer case drop that will HELP with some of the problems that will come with not doing the SYE.  This is what I have and it will get you by but I would recomend doing and a SYE if you have the money, but it will get pricey adding all these little things...  All the little things will make the difference in the quality of ride though. 

If you go with 4.5" you will have to atleast extend the driveshaft.  I got away with doing nothing on my XJ when installing a 3.5'' lift for a while, but you will not be able to flex it out at all without it sliding out.  I didn't take it off road until the driveshaft was fixed.

With the lift I would agree with what LeadNotFollow said.  Are you willing to trim your fenders and bumpstop?  If so I would stay at 3.5.   If not go to 4.5".

Bumpers.  What are you looking at for from a bumper?  Do you want something that is winch capable?  Or just basic?  Are looks more important than price?

Is there a lot of difference between newer XJ's like what you all are talking about?  Mine is a 93, and I have a differing opinion.  I was running 4.5" of lift with regular fenders and my 31x12.50s would rub on the flares at full flex.  Now I guess take in mind I don't have swaybars though.  Now with my 33s, 4.5" of lift in front, 6.25" lift in rear, and approx 2" trimmed of fenders my 33s are about 1/16" from rubbing the fender.  With the 6.25" lift in rear I still have my stock driveshaft (no extension) and no SYE, but I do have a 1" drop for my t-case.  I'm running the 231 t-case, not sure how much of a different between that and the 242 there is?  Personally I like room between the wheel wells and the tire - I can't stand this Gen III dodge people putting 35s with only a t-bar crank - lol, but that is another story.

The difference I think is proper bumpstopping.  I doubt that you have anything besides the stock bumpstop.  If you bumpstop it properly it will not rub.  This will not hurt your flex either.  It will prevent your tire from going any further up, but it will force the other tire down, thus flexing the same but instead of flexing up into the fender it is flexing down into the dirt.

In regaurds to your bumper, this is the bumper that I am going to buy when the time comes.  It is simple, clean looking, and fairly inexpensive.  You can get it with or without d-rings.  It is pictured without D-rings, but you can get them, you just have to order it with them.

Yes their is actually a difference between the years. The mid '96 and up changed a bit and they are more prone to driveline vibes. We always recomend a SYE above 3.5" on the mid '96+ models.

Some say that they have no vibes with doing a TC drop, others say it didn't help. Can you get away without having to run a SYE? Yes but it's just a bandaid to fixing the real problem. Spend the extra bucks now and do it right is our opinion. As far as the driveshaft goes depending on what height your at you can run a SYE with a factory XJ front driveshaft without issues. We do this on a lot of rigs as it's a cheap alternative. A used driveshaft runs ya about $50 depending on where you get it.

On the older XJ's they are much less prone to the driveline vibes and customer's running 4.5" of lift typically don't need anything more than a TC drop.

Also should note, a heavy duty SYE is only available for the NP231 TC. If you have a NP242 you will need to do a hack and tap SYE.

I don't have a lot to add here, but since my XJ has been specifically referenced I will chime in.

I love the stance of my XJ with the 3.5" RE Superflex lift. I also run 33" tires. I still have my stock flares attached. We have trimmed minimally underneath to reduce rubbing and we have between 4 and 5 inches of bumpstop.

As far as the SYE goes... I just have a more confident feeling while wheeling because of it. I agree that you can go without it at this height, but it is something you will want to strongly consider in the long run.

aci4369 linked you to the front bumper that I run. I really like it!!! It has a good clean line and look. It is not super heavy duty, but it can handle the trails.

Ive heard that you can run a stock front shaft on the rear with the use of an SYE kit. No experiance of this just read about it. Could save you some cash.

Me personaly, I'm just going to do the case drop and run 4 degree shims on axel to prevent the vibes. Hope it works.

Use bumpstops they make a big differance. If it still rubs cut it up, its fun.wink

You can also save some cash by just adding tow hooks and trimming your oem frt bumper. Motion also has the best hooks to do this. My daughter and I just installed mine today. ( Thanks Motion top notch equipment. Cant wate to use them.)smile
