RE: I knew it would happen

DO NOT, I REPEATE DO NOT USE THE PETC.OCK VALVE ON THE RAD.

They will break, and than you'll be left with replacing your radiator instead. Just pull the lower hose to drain the fluid.

T-stat housing are like $15 at the local auto supply store. It's a 2-hour job tops to replace the t-stat.

Another thing you can do is run spacers on the hinges of your hood. This will make a "cowl" hood and let extra heat out. I ran mine like this for quite awhile before I installed hood vents.

Here is my write-up on that mod; http://greatlakesxj.activeboard.com/index.spark?forumID=43793&p=3&topicID=6594654

Did proping up the back of the hood help out any? Pretty much just need something to get me thru this weekend before it all gets torn down and gone thru.

Yes it helped. Not as beneficial as hood vents, but I could see heat pouring out the back of the hood after I added the spacers. It's a cheap/easy mod.

Just make sure you have some help holding your hood up when adding the spacers, you'll understand when you do it...

Well think i am going to replace the thermostat tomarrow nite. Do i have to drain the radiator or can i just keep all the hoses connected and unbolt the cover for the t-stat and just hang it up out of the way? Will this work or will the antifreeze just keep coming out? Trying to do this without wasting all of the new antifreeze that is in the radiator.

I usually pull the top hose off the t-stat housing and try to catch what I can. You'll loose some when you undo the housing itself as well, try to put a rag under the housing prior to loosening it to catch what you can so it's not all over.

2 bolts (shown by arrows) and 2 hoses to remove and off it comes.

Well last night I changed out the thermostat, the guy had a 195 in it I replaced it with a 160. Today I went to my grandpa's and we did a complete flush of the cooling system. Lots, I repeat LOTS of rust in there, got it running pretty clear though. I actually did use the petc.ock on the radiator, mine has the one on the side where you have to take the grille off to get to it. Didn't break, doesn't seem to leak, looks to be well for mine. Although only time will tell.

Now, the final verdict, still gets to 210 while driving with the AC on, when the AC is off it appears to go right about 190. Haven't let it sit and idle so I can't comment there.

What I might do is buy an auto thermometer to see if the temp. gauge is off or if it's something else.
