Rusted out water pump?

Well, took my XJ to a mechanic today (also happens to be my dad's friend) to have him look at it and see why it might be getting hot. He said it's running fine and they just run hot, my father doesn't seem to think so because his friend's wife's XJ had the same problem and the fins, if you will, on the water pump were completely rusted away. He said when they flushed her radiator it was all rusty like mine was and was most likely from the fins rusting away into there, so were the original pumps made out of steel or something? The replacement I have is aluminum with a lifetime warranty.

So, I guess tomorrow will be devoted to changing a water pump. Anyone tell me how much of a b...h this is going to be?

Also, is there any way to be absolutely sure that I have a High Output motor seeing as it's been replaced, he said he took it out of a 95' but if I wanted to go farther than taking his word how could I check?

From looking your post in Member's Rides I think that the engine looks like a HO engine.  At least it doesn't have the Renix style cooling bottle.  Someone else on here might be able to help more.

I think that there might be a place on the engine that has a serial number you could look up.

Look at the throttle body, a Renix has 3 bolts holding it on, a HO has 4 bolts holding it on.

Replaced the damn water pump, nothing wrong with it. Waste (well not really because the new one has a lifetime warranty so I don't have to worry about replacing it again.) of $36.

So now, I replace the radiator I guess. Looking at the CSV, you guys all live up here in the wonderful winter months, so what do you think about a 3 core radiator, would it keep it too cool in the winter?

Also, do these have a one or two core stock radiator?

I run the CSF's that you linked to on all my rigs and have had great results with them. They have a lifetime warranty as well thats hard to beat.

The radiator should not be able to keep it too cool in the winter, assuming you have a properly working thermostat.

My truck runs a little warm in stop and go traffic when it is 90+ outside, but runs a lot cooler on the highway. Off road last weekend I overheated. May have to do with not having a shroud, not having an auxiliary fan, or maybe the mud that had completely caked up the space between the fins. Took me 45 minutes with a hose earlier today to flush all the mud out.

Still going to add a shroud and aux fan, though.

Then again, I have Renix 4.0, not the HO.

Still, before you replace the radiator, make sure the outside is not just covered with too much gunk to flow air through.

It is also quite possible the water passages on the inside are plugged up, especially as you said the water that came out was rusty.

When you refill the system, use distilled water, not tap water. Rust in the cooling system will plug things up, and most commonly comes from hard water. Even if you have soft water or a water softener, distilled water is cheap enough (like $0.59 per gallon at Wally World) to use just for the added piece of mind.

Sprayed the radiator out just a few days after I flushed the system, and also, I think it's a bit too late to fill it with distilled water lol.
